Daniel Johns Obituary

DANIEL THOMAS JOHNS ROCKFORD - Daniel Thomas Johns passed away Feb. 24, 2015, at Wesley Willows. He was born to George and DeEtte Johns on May 5, 1918, in Rockford, the eldest of 3 brothers and 3 sisters, now all deceased. Dan graduated from Rockford Central High School. He attended The Art Institute in Chicago and then married Marguerite Shoop of Beloit, Wis. She died in 2008. They had 2 sons, Jonathan (Sandra) and Philip (Carol). Dan joined the Navy during WWII and was assigned to Germany, taking photographs of German legal papers. He was the owner and operator of The Johns Studio in Rockford, doing photography and retouching negatives and old prints. The Boy Scouts of America was a great part of his life and included being a commissioner of the Blackhawk Area Council. He had memberships and held offices in the Professional Photographers Association and the Rockford Writer's Guild where he had many poems and drawings published. He spent many hours at the Burpee Historical Museum, photographing various projects. Whenever something was going on, he had his camera, recording small and great things. He loved keeping memories alive, including taking pictures of his friends at Wesley Willows. Dan also was a longtime member of Court Street Methodist Church, serving many years as head usher. Survivors include his sons; 6 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, in the Johns Chapel at Wesley Willows, 4141 N. Rockton Ave., Rockford, IL 61103. Memorials to the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Willows or Heartland Hospice.

I just heard of Uncle Dan's passing.. I am deeply saddened.. My fondest memories going home were when I would take Mom to visit her brother Dan. The pictures I have added represent the following.
May of 2007 was the last time I saw Uncle Dan and Aunt Marguerite together.
The next pictures are when we brought Dan out to the Farm to Visit Mom October of 2013.. That was the last time Dan saw his sister before she passed in Dec. of 2013.
The next set of pictures are the last time that I saw Uncle Dan.. We went up to the Nursing home for a surprise visit. It was an extra special day particularly because of Uncle Dan's career and love of photography. It was the first SELFIE that I ever took and it was Uncle Dan's First as well. We had such a great time, my sister Phyllis included... me must have taken some 100 shots goofing around.. Thank goodness for digital.. Uncle Dan was thrilled and fascinated by it.. I explained what a SELFIE meant and he thought that was pretty cool. How about that for someone 96 years young?
In honor of Uncle Dan's Navy Service to our Country I am sharing this picture with Uncle Dan from July of 1980 as he shows me the proper way to fold the American Flag. This is by far one of my most cherished photograph and moment. The support for our military and respect of our flag are very dear to my heart.
While I am truly sad I am also happy that I got to know Uncle Dan and that now he has joined all our dearly beloved in a most glorious place. See you one day Uncle Dan.
Love Surrounds You
