Howard Graefe Obituary

HOWARD GRAEFE, 75 BELOVED DAD, PAPA AND FRIEND ROCKFORD - Howard Graefe, 75, of Rockford died April 10, 2008, in Provena St. Anne Center with his family at his side. Born Jan. 13, 1933, in Chicago, the son of Hans Ludwig and Johanna (Mahner) Graefe. Graduated from Lane Tech High School in Chicago in 1951. Proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Married the late Barbara A. (Czarnik) Graefe in Chicago on May 23, 1972. Retired after many years from Rockwell International in 1984, worked at Continental Can for six years and American National Can for six years, finally retiring in 1996. Longtime member of the Rock River Rats Boat Club. Howard loved boating, fishing and gardening, especially roses. He enjoyed being around people. He would go to the Beans Inn every Thursday in Pecatonica for a burger and beer. He also enjoyed taking trips and vacationing with his family in northern Wisconsin. He loved to spend time with his family and friends. Survivors include daughter, Jacqueline Ann (Matthew) Graefe-Berger; son, William Howard (Jessica) Graefe; estranged son, Michael Anthony Graefe; his pride and joy, granddaughter, Isabella "Izzy" Berger; brother, Walter (Faye) Graefe; sister-in-law, Delores Graefe; nephews and extended family; special friend, Dorothy Dorathy; and longtime friend, Bob Brandon. Predeceased by his parents; wife, Barbara; and brother, Arnie Graefe. Special thank-you to OSF Saint Anthony nursing staff for the extra special care. Funeral at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, in Riverside Community Church, 6816 N. Second St., with the Rev. Dr. William Richard Kerr Sr. officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 14, in Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road. Memorials to the family.

Not a Thursday goes by without one of us saying it just isn't the same without Howard and Dorothy here. I really enjoyed getting to know your father, I feel my life was richer having known him. My deepest condolences.
