Alvin Chew Obituary

Alvin Chew

August 16, 1932 - January 9, 2025

Sacramento, California - Al Chew was well-known in the Sacramento community for his volunteer work in youth baseball. He passed away on January 9, 2025 at the age of 92.

Al was born in 1932 in Oakland, where he grew up and graduated from Oakland High School. Afterwards, he started studying civil engineering at UC Berkeley before he was drafted into the US Army. During his military service, he worked as a clerk typist and was stationed in Germany. After he returned, he completed his bachelor's degree in civil engineering at California State University Sacramento. While in college, he had an internship with Sacramento County Public Works, where he eventually spent his career until his retirement in 1994.

On August 29, 1959, he married Ginger Wong, whom he met at a church while they were teens. They raised two sons, Nate and Greg, in the South Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento. Al was dedicated to youth sports, often coaching baseball and basketball teams. He was involved in youth baseball for over 50 years. Every year Pocket Little League gives the "Al Chew volunteer-of-the-year award" to the person who gives the most to the organization. Al enjoyed watching local sports teams (Raiders, Niners, and Cal Bears) and was a continuous season ticket holder to his favorite team, the Sacramento Kings, since they came to town in 1984, until his passing.

Al will forever be remembered as a good-natured, easy-to-talk to person who always showed kindness and compassion towards others. He is survived by his wife Ginger and son Greg.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 8. Email [email protected] for information.

Dear Chew family,

I was saddened to hear of Al´s passing. He held down the fort to keep Gung Ho Post 696, a Chinese American Legion post from closing until reinforcement arrived. Today, Gung Ho Post is thriving and also represent Chinese who served in America´s armed forces. Also, Gung Ho is active in the community charity. The post participate in Sacramento´s 4th of July parade, support the community, and visit veterans at Martinez. God bless the veterans.

Al was also an avid Kings fan. He has taken my brother Ed, me, and many others to the basketball games. Thank you for your generosity and kindness.
All the best and my heartfelt condolences,

Freeman Lee
