David Goodman Obituary

David Anderson Goodman was born on Christmas Eve in 1928, in the town of Paducah, Kentucky which was founded at the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee rivers. Dave would spend three summers working on towboats on those rivers while he was attending Paducah Junior College and Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. While at Union he met, courted and, married Mary Nell Benson after his graduation in 1950. Dave is accredited in California as a Licensed Professional Surveyor and as a Registered Civil Engineer and worked for the State of California, from 1956 to 1991 when he retired. Dave was affiliated with the Theban Mapping Project since its inception in 1978 and over the years has become a familiar and much loved figure to the people of the West Bank of Luxor, especially the village children. He donated his time, to give presentations of his adventures, not only at CLSA meetings, but also to elementary schools where be was able to fill those children with the wonder of the pyramids. Dave leaves behind his beloved wife Mary, his adopted daughters Marietta and Chris (Larry), his brother James, adopted son Cris Perez (Jane), extended family and multitudes of friends. A memorial service will be held on November 12th at 9 AM at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer located at the corner of Mission and Marconi Avenues. The service will be followed by a simple reception. Please, no flowers. A donation in his name to the CLSA Education Foundation (CLSA EF), 2520 Venture Oaks Way, Suite #150, Sacramento, California, 95833, would be a fitting tribute. Please write the name of the scholarship fund in the memo line - David Goodman Memorial Scholarship.

Still, to this day, every time I see a picture of the pyramids my first thoughts are of David. I know your are resting in peace because you were a Good-Man!

I was watching a show & one of the characters reminded me of Dave. Him & his wife Mary were patients at the dentist office I worked at in Carmichael. They both were two of the finest people you could ever meet! We all use to enjoy Dave's stories or jokes he'd save for us.. But mostly the charm & eloquent way he told them. (Not to mention his style)

I didn't know of his passing since leaving the dental field in 2002, but I knew looking him up after all these years, didn't look favorable.. it saddened me to read of his passing.. What a beautiful man, he truly lived up to that last name for sure!
Sorry for your loss..

Words could never express how sad I was to learn of David's passing. I first met Dave through the Surveyors Historical Society. The next thing I knew we were together on a plane to Egypt for an adventure that forever changed my life. I got to see Dave a few times after that and will cherish every minute of the time that I got to spend with him on this earth. See ya soon my southern brother!

Dear Mary, I have been wondering about you and Dave, and actually just sent him an email. I instantly knew inwardly that he no longer in this physical arena. My sincere condolences, though this I. He was so loved by me and I am certain all those who knew him. How Blessed was he to have your sweetness in his life. Lots of love to you and your family, Kate (lemongrass).

Dave was a gentle, generous and often humorous man. Many fond memories of him and Mary at LCOR, incuding helping to host the annual pancake breakfasts. Fondly remember the time he told me they had brought the sausage for the breakfast all the way back from KY on their last trip home. I bought it hook, line and sinker and then later learned it was regular old Jimmy Dean's. He will be missed.

My first memory.....all my memories are of this tall, voguish, very debonair yet humble man. Your wisdom, your smile, your laugh will be missed. I'm sorry the years came and went without as much correspondence. Please know that both of you were always and will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dave was one that gave tirelessly to the Land Surveying profession, especially to the students. We worked together in the late '70s and early 80's in the Northern California Section of ACSM. Always very impressed with his knowledge, kindness, generosity and humility. He will be truly missed by those us us lucky enough to have known him.

Cookie, the first thing I said was, "his name is Good-man, I love it" and it sounds like he was, indeed, a good-man. I am sorry for your loss. Sent with love and prayers for you and your family. Joannie

His distinctive way of pronouncing his name gave away his Southern roots to us Yankees, but it did portray the man he became to us: "Dave Good-Man". Whenever there were people going to Egypt I let them know the role an American was playing in the recording of the antiquities. There is no need in Hades for his skills but God must surely have an infinite unknown universe somewhere beyond the Restaurant At the End of the Universe needing to be recorded for Him. Good Bye, Good Man.

I am a disciple of his survey point description writing style which was passed down to me from my Caltrans boss who learned it from Dave. I also had the pleasure of meeting and dining with him a few times over the years at CLSA functions. He was very pleasant, very interesting and super smart.RIP
