Helmut Bock Obituary

Helmut M. Bock, born on July 25, 1936, in Esslingen, Germany, to the late Maria (Roedle) Bock and the late Franz Bock, passed away peacefully at age 82 on December 29, 2018, in Redding, CA. He was in the Gourmet Food industry and owner, with his wife Gerda, of the German Mecca Delicatessen in Marina, CA. Once retired, he moved to Roseville, CA where he lived for many years before recently moving to Redding CA. Helmut was a master butcher, and sausage maker, starting out in his early days as an apprentice in Germany, before working in Australia, Hobart, Switzerland, and settling in the United States. Helmut was the loving husband of the late Gerda Bock. He is survived by his daughter, Morgan; son-in-law Marc, granddaughter, Samantha Waldroup of Redding & Carmel Valley CA; his brother Hans Bock; sister Maria Merk of Germany; as well as extended family members of Germany and San Bruno, CA. Helmut enjoyed cooking, making gourmet sausage and his famous smoked salmon, even after retiring, as well as making German pretzels every year at the San Francisco, CA Oktoberfest. He enjoyed gym workouts and swimming with friends, skiing, anything in nature, and loved visiting family and friends in Germany often. Helmut was also an avid sports enthusiast "Go 49'ers!" He was a member of the Schwaben Verein German Club and Freundschaft Liederkranz Choir in San Francisco. Friends and family can pay their respects at the celebration of life on Saturday, February 16, 2019, in Roseville, CA. Please contact Morgan for information and to RSVP at [email protected]. It´s really hard to believe that 3 years have passed since you left us . Whenever I drive past the Deli I often think of you and Frau Bock as well as the other German ladies. I no longer shop at the Deli but my memories will always be with me. Herr Bock you are missed by many people but we all know you are in a much better place. Rest in peace and may God Bless you and your family and friends.

Helmut and Gerda were always greeting everyone with warmth when they had the Mecca Deli in Marina. I remember always going for the fleishsalat, sausages and other items from Germany. It wasn't the same once he retired. My sincerest condolences to family and friends.

I am so sorry to hear of Helmut's passing. My deepest condolences to the family. Helmut and Gerda were truly great loving and caring people. They always greeted me with a smile when I came into Mecca deli. I spent many evenings at the deli with Helmut making his great bratwurst and salami. He taught me so many things about butchering, making sausage and salami and cooking. We also enjoyed hunting at Pico Blanco and fishing on the bay for salmon. Helmut and Gerda were just fun to be around and I will dearly miss them. Rest in peace my friend. Sincerely John Allen

I started going to MECCA Deli when I was 13 yrs old - that's when I first met Helmut and Gerta. I'm now 63, and I can sadly say that MECCQ Deli was not the same after Helmut retired. It was wonderful to see him again at different events in the San Francisco area selling German pretzels. Helmut and MECCA was who and what I missed most when I moved away from Marina. My deepest sympathy and condolences to Helmut's family. He was family and friend to all of us customers.

We were sorry to hear of Helmut's passing. He was a very generous man, always sharing his delicious sausages and specialty meats. We also enjoyed skiing with him at Sugar Bowl. He always had a wonderful attitude and smile.

Helmut and Gerda were what was best about Marina, when my family moved there many years ago. My mother felt at home at Mecca, enjoying the foods and companionship from her beloved Germany. It was where the German wives went to meet and share stories and friendship. Thank you for all the joyful memories, Helmut and Gerda. My thoughts are with your family.

My family and I are deeply sadend by the news of Herr Bock's passing. I knew him and Frau Bock most of my life. My Mother was a frequent shopper of Mecca Deli from the time it first opened in Marina.
Later as I got older as well as my cousin we would go ourselves and buy sandwiches and other items on my Mother's list. My memories of Mecca and the Bock's are amongst some of my fondest from my life.
Herr Bock was truly a wonderful man. My family sends our condolences to the family and friends of this wonderful man.
Heaven has a new Angel who will bless everyone with his wonderful cooking. Rest in Peace Herr Bock!
