James FONG Obituary

FONG, James King
Of Sacramento, California passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014.

He was born in Sacramento on July 16, 1922 and graduated from C.K. McClatchy High School in 1939, before enlisting in the U.S Army Air Corp. Jim served as a navigator-bombardier on a B-17 and flew 35 missions over Germany during WWII.

After the war, he came back to Sacramento and married Emilie Wong. Jim and Emilie were married for 62 years until his beloved Emilie passed away in 2010. Jim worked at McClellan Air Force Base as a Systems Analyst for 30 years before finishing his career in the private sector, while helping to raise his 4 children.

In his spare time, Jim enjoyed fishing for Steelhead on the Sacramento River, until he rediscovered his love for ballroom dancing. He was also his sons' biggest fans and never missed any of their baseball, softball or basketball games.

Jim is survived by three of his children: Kenneth James Fong (Sharon) of Sierra Madre, Robert King Fong (Whitney) of Sacramento, and James King Fong Jr. (Terry) of Seattle. His daughter, Melinda Gee-Wong of Sacramento, predeceased him in 2001.

Jim is also survived by nine grandchildren: Kelly Wong, Miriam Gee, Andy Gee, Janessa Fong, Rebecca Fong, Christian Fong, Sydney Fong, Gabrielle Fong and Lucas Fong.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the First Chinese Baptist Church, 4470 Custis Avenue in Sacramento, at 10:30am.

I know some time has passed and I send my heart felt sympathy.

I am a retired Air Force MSgt and now a History teacher in Victorville, California on the former George Air Force Base. As my class was conducting research we came across a PDF file of an old year book of Class 44-5 Bombardier. I would like to send the PDF file to a relative if possible. My grandfather served during WWII in Colorado and I know little to nothing about his time in the Army and I would like to pass this information on to others in his family.
My email is [email protected].

Words are never adequate in moments like these. We will say though, that our hearts go out to you and your family. We will always remember the joyous memories that we are privileged to have in knowing your Dad James, Mom Emilie and Sister Melinda. You and the entire Fong Family are in our prayers during this difficult time.

As a highly decorated navigator-bombardier on a B-17 with 35 missions over Germany in WWII, he is a quiet hero.
