John Russell "Russ" Deterding Jr.

John Deterding Obituary

Passed away on August 18, 2015, at the age of 85. A native of Carmichael, Russ graduated from Sacramento High School and St. Mary's College of Moraga. Russ led Marines in combat during the Korean War as a Marine Corps officer. In 1968, Russ was president of the Sutter Club. Russ also served as president of the Camellia Festival Association, the Sutter Hospital Research Foundation, and the Children's Receiving Home. In addition, he served as director of Sacramento Rotary, the Red Cross and the CYO, Foreman of the Sacramento Grand Jury, Regent of St. Mary's College and was a founding parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish. Russ was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lou Ann Compton Deterding and his parents John (Dick) and Josephine Deterding. He is survived by his daughters, Donna Deterding, Josephine Hobbs (John), Peggy Bunting (Dwight), Paula Deterding and sons, John Deterding, Pete Deterding (Diane), and Richard Deterding (Carrie). He leaves behind 24 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 22 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Carmichael, followed by a memorial mass at 11:00 a.m. with Msgr. James Kidder officiating. Remembrances may be made in Russ's memory to St. Vincent de Paul, Our Lady of the Assumption or to the charity of your choice.

Russ gave me my first job after moving to Sacramento. He and Lou Ann were two of the kindest people I've had the pleasure of knowing. The memories are many...and the love is deep! Love to all the children.

My "cousin" Russ was my inspiration,
He stood tall, defended our nation.
He had an awesome zest for life,
He now sits with Jesus, and Lou Ann, his wife.
Wonderful children they did raise,
Oh, how I long for those old days.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting Russ Deterding at the Senior Living Community where I worked and he lived. He was truly one of the kindest people I have ever met and I can say without a doubt that he had more visitors than anyone else, always surrounded by his loving family, his old friends and all the new friends he made on a daily basis. I only worked 3 nights per week, but Russ always made sure to come by the front office after dinner to say goodnight and to sing, Rosie you are my posy, which he told me was an Al Jolson song. He was very proud that he served our country, even more proud of every single member of his family and always expressed how blessed he was to have them. It is difficult to lose a family member or friend, but I can imagine him now with his beloved wife and mother of his children up in heaven. Rest in Peace, dear Russ! I will never forget you or your kindness.
