Joshua Wingert Obituary

Joshua Riley "Otis" "The Mayor" Wingert joined his fellow angels after a brave and courageous 2-1/2 year battle against brain cancer. Joshua was a huge fan of Batman, a collector of die-cast cars, a baseball fan, especially the SF Giants and River Cats, and a big fan of Harry Potter. Joshua had an infectious spirit and positivity that endeared him to everyone he met. Joshua never met a stranger, was a friend to all, and loved everyone unconditionally. Despite his own struggles and health problems, Joshua was always more focused on others and their well-being and never complained about how he felt. Joshua was preceded in death by his paternal Grandmother, Lesley Wingert, along with maternal and paternal Great Grandparents. Joshua will be greatly missed by his parents, Jeff and Jessica and loving brother, Jacob, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and so many friends he made along the way. Joshua was a beacon of light that brightened the world around him. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, March 24th @ 1PM at Sacred Heart Church - 1040 39th St Sacramento, Ca. At 3PM, a celebration of Joshua's life will be held at Kit Carson School- 5301 N St Sacramento, Ca. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Joshua's name to the following charities: The Okizu Foundation, Make A Wish, The Leukemia/ Lymphoma Society, and The Children's Tumor Foundation.

I was a dear friend in Troop 136 with Joshua Wingert, having spent time within my younger years (2016-2017 timeframe) and having made several fond memories while on campouts and outings. Josh was one of my most closest friends in scouting during that time of uncertainty, where I was just a fresh face looking to belong-and we found each other and made it together. His character was the living embodiment of every tenet that Scouting presented. He was the first among a multitude of people that encouraged and eventually energized me to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, the trail finally coming to a end in June of 2022. This is for you, dear friend. Rest easy.

Josh,

Your battle took the complexities of cancer that I thought I understood and offered an entirely different perspective on them. As I enter a career attempting to help others, you stand as a beacon of inspiration that will continue to inspire me in ways no one else has.

I met you as baby when your father and I worked together many years ago. He and your mother loved you so much. Your parents, extended family and friends were so lucky to have you in their lives. May God bless you, your brother, and parents. You will always be in many people's hearts. Rest in peace.

April 7, 2018

My dear sweet Joshua, I am so grateful for all of those impactful life lessons you taught me in your short time here with us. Most importantly how love can overpower the negative. All I have to do is think of you to put life in perspective. Your family, friends and mere acquaintances are all blessed for having known you. I am going to miss that smile and positivity, but know all I have to do is think of you and I will have all those wonderful memories. Especially all of the visits that you, your mom, dad and brother Jacob took to Washington to visit your Uncle Randy and I. It was so special to us. May you rest in peace...

Josh was always so excited to see people. Whether he was meeting you for the first time or seeing you again, he was genuinely always happy to see you!! He truly loved life and saw everything in a positive way. I'm glad I had the opportunity to see him on different occasions. I will always remember his love of life and people and his precious smile. My prayers go out to the families and friends of this young hero. All though I didnt personally meet Joshua Ive heard some wonderful stories and memories of the impact he left on his friends. He was a hero to so many! He sounded like a remarkable young human with an old soul. I believe God does have a reason for his calling at such an early age and he will be waiting for all of us to join the enteral life that God has given and chosen for him.

I was a childhood friend to Julie Sazaki and my late brother, Greg was also a friend to Jermery. The Sazaki Family was a beautiful family that invited so many into their home and Joshua was blessed to have them as his family. I can see why Joshua left such a deep impact on all these friends with the Sazakis as a family backbone. The loss of a child is one that impacts a family on so many levels and I pray you find the strength as you move forward In the coming months and years. There are good days and bad ones. Please know he is at peace and when your having a hard day look up at the sky and smile knowing your angel is watching you. I know my angel Greg is! I just wanted to let you know as you celebrate his life and all the great memories that he left, so many people who didnt know him are praying and celebrating along side you knowing God has a special angel named Joshua now.

My memories of Josh all tend to be at his aunt Julie's house. He was always so excited to see Zephyr and hang out with the boys. His excitement and delight was contagious, it made me happy that he was so happy. He was quick with a smile and a hug. I'm glad that our paths crossed.

I miss you bunches, Josh. I just want to let you know I got a Harry Potter tattoo for you. I know our family isnt big on tattoos but I couldnt think of a better way to keep you with me ALWAYS. Always is what it says. Because when I think of Harry Potter, I think of when Dumbledore was talking Snape, when we find out hes a good guy, and Dumbledore says After all this time? And Snape said Always meaning he will always love Lily, just like Ill always love you. You were the most amazing person I have ever met. I dont know how many times I prayed to God to have me take your place so you could give the world all the positivity and goodness you always carried. I love you always, Josh. Never will you leave my side and heart.

Josh's Aunt Julie and I have been friends for 43 years and because we're both named Julie, we've been referred to by our first and last names. In my experience, Josh remembered names from the first meeting. Every greeting from him was full of happiness and an "oh, I've waiting to see you again old friend" home coming feeling. Always a hi juliemadden in his distinct voice and a big hug. He saw wonderment in life and people and it was contagious. Which too comes from his parents and family. Of course the adults in his family were and are fantastic people, but I was so impressed by his brother Jacob and his cousins who looked out for Joshua and just loved him and would so unabashedly show their protection and love and affection. We were and are lucky to have had him in our lives.

I miss Josh and think about him a lot, especially on my day off when I would try to visit him. As a tear comes to my eye, the memory of his fun loving, kind spirit always turns the tears to joy. Reminds me of how great his family is, always making him happy and comfortable, and keeping him laughing and smiling. Playing cars at the little league field,, watching old cartoons of batman and speed racer on youtube, getting icees at 7-eleven - all great memories!! It was so fun to be a kid again with Josh, so much fun to be around! He was so polite and nice to everyone in spite of his condition, I learned a lot from him. Josh would facetime me and ask about everyone including snoopy. I would pass the phone around so he could say hi to everyone then he would ask "when are we gonna get together?". Miss you little buddy! I know you are being nice and genuine to all you come in contact with...

Josh brought so much joy to East Sac Little League. It was an honor and pleasure for my boys and husband to share their baseball experience with him. He brought a love for the game, camaraderie, and an unparalleled team spirit. How lucky we are to have known you, Josh, and what a lasting impact you have had on my family and all who knew you. You will be missed but you have spread more joy, love, and smiles in this world in your short time than most people do in an entire lifetime. Much love to you and family. Rest in Peace. He never forgot a face or a name and always seemed happy to see you. Josh was a wonderful good will ambassador. When just a small boy he could identify just about any vehicle that drove by. I'm an oldster but still can't do that. Josh was an amazing social planner, phone at the ready, lining up visits with friends. He participated and was interested in so many things and crammed a lot of living into his too short life. We'll miss our sweet nephew, Josh.

Joshua was truly a one-of-a-kind kid who we all loved. He always brought smiles to our faces as he greeted us with big hugs and asked us how we were doing. His zest for life was inspiring. Josh always wanted to live life to the fullest, would never let anything slow him down, and never complained about anything (unless it was leaving a party early). Mike loved talking baseball with him, Keira enjoyed watching him play the piano, and I loved how he would entertain all of us at our parties. Saying Josh will be missed is an understatement. He will live on in all of our hearts in so many ways. We are here for you Jessica, Jeff, and Jacob if you need anything. We love you, Joshua, and may you Rest In Peace knowing how many lives you have changed just by being you. ❤
