Lola McVey Obituary

McVEY, LOLA VIRGINIA

Age 70, went to God on September 8, 2002 due to complications following a heart attack. A resident of Rancho Cordova since 1969, she was born November 18, 1931 in New York Mills, Minnesota to Jacob and Annie Hemming. She was a U.S. Air Force wife to Lt. Col. (Ret.) Don D. McVey. They, along with their children, were stationed at Castle AFB and Mather AFB in California, Carswell AFB, Texas, and Minot AFB and Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota. After her husband's retirement, she worked for 25 years, including employment as a Federal Civil Service employee at the Sacramento Army Depot and Mather AFB. She also worked for the Sacramento office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where she retired in July 2000. She loved to participate in travel tours, making many trips throughout California and also to other well known scenic and historical sites across the U.S. She spent many hours knitting clothing and making quilts for her children and grandchildren. Her sewing room was always piled high with new projects, each meticulously completed to the highest standard of quality. She walked almost daily and was involved in many Cordova Senior Center activities, including line dancing. She took piano lessons again, lessons she had not been able to complete as a child during the 1930s. Her energy was boundless and she pursued life with vigor. The torch she carried which made life a little brighter for those she knew will continue to light the way as it passes on to her survivors. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Don D. McVey and their four children, David C. McVey, Steven G. McVey, Lori A. Biddle, Lisa D. Gothrow, as well as her brother Marvin Hemming. She left four grandchildren, Leanna Marie Biddle, Steven McVey's children Keegan James McVey and Caitlin Lea McVey, and David Caleb Gothrow. Her sons-in-law are Mark D. Biddle and David L. Gothrow, Jr. Her daughter-in-law is Susan L. McVey. There will be no services; however, friends are invited anytime between the hours of 1:00 PM-3:00 PM to celebrate her life with family on September 28, 2002 at Cordova Senior Center, 3480 Routier Road in Rancho Cordova.

Dear McVey Family,

My prayers and thoughts are with your family. My father recently pasted away unexpectedly of a heart attack in August. I know that this can be a difficult time of mourning. Continue to be strong as a family and comfort one another.

Dear Mr. McVey, Lori, Leanna and family--

What a great lady!! And she sewed too!! I certainly do remember seeing her smiling face at Leanna's 1st starring role on stage in Benicia.

You were incredibly blessed to have such a bright light in your life. She obviously raised a wonderful family and it warms my heart to hear of a couple married for 48 years.

You will be in my prayers.

To the McVey Family -

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my Dad this year and know the feelings you are going through. It was such an honor to know and work with your Mother here at the Corps of Engineers. We spent many a lunch hour knitting/sewing and laughing the hour away. She'll be missed.
