Lyle HINTZ Obituary

HINTZ, Lyle August Paul
11/10/1920 - 6/26/2013
Lyle passed away at Eskaton Care Center in Fair Oaks California after a short struggle with Multiple Myaloma with his family at his bedside. Lyle was born to William and Anna Hintz in Madison Nebraska the fifth of eight children. He was raised on the family farm in Enola, Nebraska. He attended parochial school in Madison and high school at Enola. He completed the 9th grade before he was forced to leave school during the Great Depression to help with the family farm and work on neighboring farms to help support the family. While in his teens he and his brother Gilbert hitch-hiked to Mexico through Texas, hard to do during the Depression. In his late teens he drove with his brother Clarence to Los Angeles worked for his Uncle selling bananas and also in a slaughter house, killing and plucking chickens to earn cash to return to Nebraska. His joy of travel lasted his whole life. He was planning a trip down the Rhine in Germany with his daughter before he became ill. At 22 he joined the Army and went to signal corp training at Milford, Nebraska for seven months. While on leave he met his sweetheart Virginia Lee Johnson. After training he was sent to Camp Kohler in Sacramento California for additional training, while there he asked Virginia to marry him. They were married in Sacramento on Sept. 9, 1943. Nine days later, Sept 18, 1943 he was sent over to Africa and then to Egypt where he was stationed doing radio service work. He was able to travel while overseas and visited Bethlehem, many pyramids, the Sphinx, rode a camel and an elephant. When he returned from World War II they bought 5 acres in North Highlands where they raised their four children. Lyle worked as a civilian employee for 25 years at McClellan AFB in the Communication Section working on electronics trouble shooting and repair. He retired in June 1969 and went back to school taking classes in Chemistry and Biology just for the fun of learning. He continued to develop his skills in investing in the stock market and land. They sold the 5 acres and move to 50 acres in Shingle Springs in 1984 and remained there until Virginia died in June of 2007. He sold off stock right before the big crash and bought 17 acres in Wilton where he lived until his was hospitalized. He leaves behind, sons Lyle D. Hintz Sr. and Martin S. Hintz (wife Kathleen Herdell), daughter Marlene A. Carter (husband John), grandchildren Julie Hintz (husband Bart Hubbard), Barbara Hintz (husband Charley Herold), Tamara Hintz, Lyle D. Hintz Jr. (spouse David Sternburg), Audrey Sugar, Tony Sugar, Chris Sugar, Stacia Carter, Steve Carter, great grandchildren Luke Hubbard, Allura Hubbard, Delaney Hubbard, Charolotte Hubbard, Canon Herold, brothers August Hintz and Gilbert Hintz, sisters Ileen Boe, and Evelyn Kurpqeweit, extended family Nancy and George Nye, Bill Pennington and Ambre Perrault. I have many fond memories since being "adopted" into the Hintz family back in 1987. There were many summers spent up at the farm in Shingle Springs where we enjoyed taunting cattle and peacocks, exploring, hiking mountains, retrieving well-water, camping, baking fresh blackberry pie with Grandma, and doing our best to conserve water when it came to flushing the toilet. I never knew that so little was needed to enjoy life. Thank you Grandpa for being a simple, frugal man. You taught me a lot. Until we meet again...

He was a Mighty Sequoia of a man, and I am honoured to have known him just as I joined the incredible Hintz clan. May the Patriarch of this fine family rest in peace. ??? ???? ?????

Uncle Lyle will be missed, but never forgotten. Lyle was always such a kind Uncle that loved to kid around with us kids when we were little. Fond memories of visiting Lyle and family in 1959. Very lucky to have had the pleasure of seeing him last year in Florida with Marty. See you again in heaven.

Our sincere sympathy to all of the family of Lyle. I, Merle, had the opportunity to know him all of my life since we grew up on farms next to each other in Madison County. He was a great person.

Sincerely,

Merle (one of Lyle's 1st cousins once removed) and Darlene Jansen
