Robert Edward Reid and Audrey Reid Obituary

IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR PARENTS

REID, ROBERT EDWARD REID, AUDREY VIOLA
Born February 10, 1919 in Oakland, CA; Born February 15, 1920 in Fresno, CA;
Died August 31, 2003 in Camino, CA Died August 31, 2003 in Camino, CA

Killed in a house fire on Sunday, August 31, 2003, Bob and Audrey Sturtevant Reid of Camino, CA, just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on August 18 with family and special friends. They were married in Oakland, CA in 1938 and on June 27, 1947 Bob and Aud made Camino their home. They bought a home that eventually was purchased by the State of California in order to build The Pony Express Trail - now Highway 50. In 1962 Bob and Aud with their three children, Bobby, Donna and Karen, rebuilt a brand new house on the back of the property.

The Reids loved living here. The family of five camped the entire summers at Sly Park where water skiing, sunbathing, fishing, and swimming together occupied their days. On handcrafted skis Bob made, they were the first family to ever water ski on Sly Park Lake. For a change of pace, they leased a cabin for two years just below Strawberry and Bob would come up for the weekends after the workweek. With plenty of dirt roads in the area, the Reid's enjoyed four-wheeling even carving tracks in untamed territories, which today, are commonly used SUV roads. As baseball season came around, Bob and Aud travelled, watching Bobby pursue his love of pitching.

Bob worked as a carrier driver for Michigan-California Lumber Company and later for the El Dorado County Road Department where he retired. He spent his time with Aud raising their three children and also entertaining family and friends. He was extremely active and always had a multitude of projects and hobbies ongoing. Bob loved to hunt, fish, abalone dive, water ski, weld, dance, landscape, tell stories, play practical jokes, follow stocks, and even watch sports. He was Mr. Everything Improvement...with the latest of cool accessories for his cars and boats...the grandchildren thought they had the hippest grandpa anywhere. He could fix and do just about anything. In fact, he was the only one we all know who could spray paint a jeep or a computer with cans of spray paint and make them almost brand new. He was a strong, ambitious, generous man.

Audrey was always at Bob's side the two were inseparable. She was a wonderful and supportive housewife...and a terrific mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gourmet cooking, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, card games like solitaire, and playing all four hands of Bridge by herself anything that took that extra bit of brainpower. Aud was a seamstress, designing beautiful clothes like Donna and Karen's prom dresses, which, later, her grandchildren loved to play dress-up in. She also enjoyed crocheting - the beautiful blankets she spent hours making for the women in the family have always been proudly displayed in our living rooms. The stained glass artwork around the Reid residence and the focal point of their front door were also the talent of Audrey's.

About four years ago, Audrey was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. They were faced with challenging days ahead but Bob refused to let her out of his sight. Audrey, like most Alzheimer's victims, was scared and confused but still had her strong personality and her canny sense of humor. Because she was so loved and respected, it was difficult for Bob and the families see her change. Unexpectedly, was some adjusting: we were all faced with changing ourselves, too how we talked and spent our time with a loving mother, grandmother, and friend who once wouldn't have miss a beat. Bob had to adjust the most.

Survived by cousin and best friend Ed McKenzie; their son Bobby (Bob) Reid, his wife Donna Jean, and their children Randy Reid, Danny Reid and Nancy Decker; their middle daughter Donna, her husband Jerry Bacigalupi, and their daughters Jenna Cosca, Kristen Riter, and Debbie Bacigalupi; their youngest daughter Karen Gilbert, her husband Bill Cox, and her children Kim Grissom and Richard Hightower; their in-law grandchildren and great-grandchildren by Jenna and Chris Cosca: Jessica and Jack; Kristen and Steve Riter: E'lan; Randy and Jennifer Reid: Justine and Brody; Dan and Kelli Reid; Nancy and Chris Decker: Regan, Riley, Morgan, and Kyle; Kim and Jon Grissom: Kayla and Dylan; Richard and Lynette Hightower: Christian and Abigail
