Roger Lieberman Obituary

Dr. Roger Arnold Lieberman

December 3, 1938 - May 31, 2024

Sacramento, California - Roger Arnold Lieberman, M.D. passed away at home in Sacramento, California on May 31, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Sue Mortensen and their son James Adamson. Roger is also survived by his much loved children from a previous marriage, Risa Grayson of Marin County and Erica Lieberman of Sacramento. He is grandfather to Koen Adamson, Brooks Adamson, Andrew Lieberman, Ashley Lieberman, Brandon Grayson and Devon Grayson and the loving uncle to Emmie and Rylee Fiel.

Dr. Lieberman was a native of New York City. He graduated from City College of New York and attended Howard University Medical School, after which he transferred to Einstein College of Medicine where he received his medical degree. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. Following graduation, he completed residency at Bronx Municipal Hospital. He served in the National Health Service in Washington, D.C. during the Viet Nam war, retiring as a Colonel. Dr. Lieberman practiced at the University of California at San Francisco where he was a teaching Fellow from 1972-1976. In 1976 Dr. Louis Livoti, a friend and colleague, moved to Sacramento to join a Nephrology practice. He enticed Roger to join him. The group became known as Capital Nephrology. At one time, the practice provided services to eight regional hospitals, traveling as far as Placerville, Auburn, Davis, Woodland and Dixon to treat patients. In his practice, Dr. Lieberman touched the lives of countless patients and their families. He retired "the first time" in 2002 but returned at various times on a limited basis.

In 1982-84, Dr. Lieberman was Chief of Staff at Methodist Hospital. Subsequently he became president of Western Regional Dialysis and Transplant Network (1986-88). From 1985 until 1998 he was managing partner of Capital Nephrology Medical group. Dr. Lieberman was recognized by the Arthritis Foundation in 2001 as Humanitarian of the Year. In 2002 he was honored with the Golden Stethoscope award by the Sierra Sacramento Medical Society for memorable service to the community. In 2002 the Sutter Health Family Practice Residency program named Dr. Lieberman "Teacher of the Year" for outstanding teaching, mentorship and support in 2002.

In 2014, Dr. Lieberman retired, allowing him to focus on his lifelong interest in photography. He found personal reward and notable success with his work, much of which has been exhibited locally and in San Francisco. He found a supporting community in Viewpoint Photographic through its workshop programs, exhibitions and in later years in his role as a docent in the art gallery.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a future date.

Rogers celebration of life was as he had wished it. A party with music, food, wine, Family, and friends. The people that turned out! Nurses from 20 or more years ago, patients, fellow practitioners and of course loved ones. Maybe 125 plus people groved to “Kind of Blue” the signature Miles Davis music Roger loved. Their is grief for those missing by choice or circumstance.

Roger was a beloved husband and dedicated physician who lived a life of profound compassion, unwavering commitment, and a deep love for those around him. His long and fruitful career in medicine was a testament to his selfless dedication to the well-being of his patients, whom he treated with kindness and respect. As a husband, he was a pillar of strength and support, always putting his family's needs before his own. Roger touched countless lives, leaving behind a legacy of healing, love, and resilience. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit continues to inspire those who knew him, and his contributions to the world will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of crossing his path-my condolences to Sue and the family.

I was a CCU nurse on the evening shift at Methodist Hospital. One night I had a bad feeling about a youngish MI patient. His labs and EKG were fine but I couldn´t shake the feeling of doom so I called the exchange. Dr. Lieberman called back during the intermission of an opera or live event he was attending downtown. He didn´t laugh or yell or question my call but instead said he´d stop by after his event was over. He did. The patient was coding. We worked on him for over an hour. There was nothing that could have prevented this as the patient showed no signs of distress earlier. What touched me was Dr.Lieberman´s willingness to listen to what amounted to just a nurse´s intuition. I can´t think of another doctor who would have come in based on my report. He collaborated with the nurses and treated us as equals and he truly cared for his patients. Though I only knew him in a professional capacity he always expressed interest in my life and we would chat about a wide range of topics. He was delightful to talk to. He was my mom´s doctor and did an amazing job getting her hypertension under control. When I told him how much I loved his photos he brought me some prints which I treasure. Truly a Renaissance man.
Dr. Lieberman, you will be missed.

My window of time with Roger was relatively short, but impactful to me. I was fortunate enough to meet Roger through my physician-wife. As a physician myself one would think our conversations were medical in nature. In actuality, they covered a variety of subjects including wine, photography, family and relationships. I always came away entertained, wiser and looking forward to the next conversation. Roger always felt to me to be an authentic Renaissance man which I identify as knowledgeable, warm, erudite, true to his craft and patients, and thoughtful. I wish peace to you, Sue, at this time. This is a significant loss to us all.

Roger made such an impact on so many. As a yough primary care geriatric9an Roger would often "co sult" with me, offer his wisdom, and even ask me for my input. I loved just running into Roger in the hospital. Each interaction made my day better. I still treasure some of his photographs. Roger, your memory will always be a blessing. And Sue, sending you thought of love and care.

My favorite memory of Dr.Lieberman is when he and Dr. Livoti attended my 20 year kidney transplant anniversary party. Held in my backyard in Citrus Heights, it was such a thoughtful and caring gesture. My guests were impressed. Thank you Doc for everything. Still have it - 43 years.

Dr Lieberman, Doc, was my personal physician years earlier. I have always remembered him for his level of genuine concern, his ability to listen and his overall willingness to be forthright and honest. His laughter is unforgettable, and I imagine he was the same in his personal life. Prayers for his family and friends. Rest in Peace, Doc.

Roger was a dear friend and colleague. I had the pleasure of working with him for 30+ years. He was an amazing man and Nephrologist who touched so many lives. A teacher and mentor who inspired us to see beyond the superficial and embrace the whole person. I shall always remember his robust laugh. You are in my prayers.
