Ron Cunha Obituary

Sacramento, California - Ron Cunha 1956 – 2022 A giant of Sacramento's music scene died on January 1. Trombonist, bandleader, educator Ron Cunha was 65. His mentoring guided hundreds of student musicians – many now professionals. Born in San Jose, Ron inherited musicality from his university professor dad, Joseph. In Sacramento, Ron attended Kennedy High. After De Anza Community College, the trombonist studied at CSU Northridge. As a CSU Sacramento staffer, Cunha directed elite ensembles and founded a Winter Jazz Festival that continues to this day. His resume includes teaching at Cosumnes River and Northridge Colleges. His Rio Americana and Jesuit High bands won contests California-wide. Natalie Cole, Tom Jones and Dionne Warwick were among stars who engaged him as a sideman. Cunha's All-Star Jazz Band exploded on Sacramento stages in the '90s and worked solidly. Monthly band gigs packed the Clubhouse (Carmichael) for many years. The leader's legacy lies in phenomenal student achievements and enhanced appreciation among jazz lovers all over California. Ron Cunha is survived by siblings Dave, Allyn, and Leslie. His funeral is at George L. Klumpp Chapel of flowers (2691 Riverside Boulevard, Sacramento) at 10 am, Saturday January 22.

I went to school with Ron and what an amazing mucisiin. Years later Ron and his band played at my folks 40 anniversary in the Clunie Cluvhouse.in the 90's He had everyone up on the floor. Loved his jazz. RIP brother Ron
