Charles Russell Barber II

1964 - 2024

MACHIAS - On Aug. 22, 2024, unexpectedly in Roundup, Mont., Charles Russell Barber II made his last long haul to Heaven to go on his final fishing expedition.

He was born in Niagara Falls, but spent much of his time in the Little Valley, Ellicottville and Franklinville areas. Having seen 48 of the 50 states in his career as a truck driver, he competed on the Ellicottville High School rifle team and learned the satisfaction of a hard day's work from his dad, whom he talked frequently about.

Charles served three years in the U.S. Army Reserves while working many jobs in the area. He went on to be a man of many talents. He was proud of his rank as a semi-professional pool player, playing against some of the world's best from his time in North Carolina.

He always enjoyed the quiet times in nature, surrounded by the trees and serenity from everyday life. His goal was to live his days after retirement in a nice cabin in the woods with a dog and a fishing pole.

Charles loved driving big rigs, traveling state to state, stopping for many pictures of scenery, and fishing in fresh and salt waters. He was always taking time to stop and visit family and friends. His subtle sense of humor will be greatly missed along with his big heart and pure soul. "Keep the back door to Heaven open for us, Charles," we always said.

Charles leaves behind three sisters, Bonnie Barber Baker of Machias, Tina C. (Dennis) Barber-Veith of Cattaraugus and Malinda D. Barber of Franklinville, along with many nieces, nephews and a few very close friends whom he called family.

He was predeceased by his mother, Joanne E. Barber, and father, Charles R. Barber.

A celebration of life is being planned for 3–6 p.m. Sunday (July 27, 2025) at the Gary Herman Memorial Park, 3491 Union St., Machias.

To honor his legacy, donations in his name may be made to the Franklinville Conservation Club Kids Day.
