I knew Derek from elementary school thru High School. He was friends with my son and I worked at Morgan and East. He was a good friend and a good Christian. I enjoyed watching him grow from a little boy to a fine young man, he will be missed but God has gained another soul to watch down on us.

I was so Blessed to be Derek's father. I cherish every moment I ever spent with him. I watched him suffer greatly the last 5 years, but never complained. Instead he chose to live life to the fullest. He was an inspiration to all that knew him and will be for me until my last breath. My son may your Halo glow as bright as your eyes did and your jolly laugh ring out in Heaven like a trumpet of joy. May your beautiful smile be the first ray of early morning sunshine. Love forever.......

I didnt have the honor of knowing this young man but I followed his 5 yr journey on FB. I never missed a post. He was definitely a fighter. It amazed me the attitude and zest for life he still had knowing he had cancer. I pray for strength and peace for you all during this hard time.

When I first met Derek, he was a young boy. I remember his beautiful blonde hair, and him always having a smile that was contagious on his face. Looking at his pictures through this journey, he has kept that same smile from his childhood.
I pray that right now you all find peace in knowing that he is no longer suffering, and that he has been an inspiration to so many others fighting a similar fight.
May God wrap you in His grace during this difficult time.

Derek did touch the hearts of many with his determination and forever smile. Me and my family kept up with his journey.
We admire you Carrie for always being by his side, even though we know the the struggle was hard at times. He will be so missed. He will be remembered by the fight to live he had. The love he had for life, family, friends, and the ever so giving heart he had to help others. No one couldve done that alone. Carrie you helped him. You stayed strong. It will get hard at times, but as you said, you will meet again. He had such wonderful family and friends who supported him anc surrounded him with love.

Derek lived his life as all people should. He was the type of person whom you'd meet for the first time and he'd act like an old friend. Derek was a beacon of hope and strength for those battling cancer or other ailments with his infectious smile and sense of humor. He inspired others through music and unwavering optimism despite such a grim diagnosis. He loved his wife Carrie with a passion. Although he is gone, his spirt will always live on through his loved ones, friends and people who admired him.
