Ruby Mae Owen Cohen

1932 - 2024

Ruby Mae Owen Cohen, 92 of Salisbury passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Born February 18, 1932 in Salisbury, daughter of the late Mazie Myers Owen and Cham Young Owen. Ruby graduated from Cleveland High School, class of 1949. She attended Mitchell College on a basketball scholarship where she played the guard position. She met her husband to be while working at McClellan's 5 and 10 Cent over Christmas Break. Ruby married Billy Lee Cohen of Salisbury November 23, 1951 and worked as a bookkeeper and typist until their first of three sons was born.

Ruby enjoyed raising and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and attending their many sports activities. She was a lifetime member of Enon Baptist Church where she was the altar floral coordinator for many years. She also volunteered in the nursery, assisted with Bible School and was a member of the Faith Sunday School class.

Proceeding her in death were her beloved husband of 60 years Billy “Bill” Lee Cohen, her son William “Billy” Thomas Cohen, her four brothers Norman & wife Ruby Lee, Harold & wife Julia & daughter Juana, James and Melvin & wife Becky Owen, two sisters Alice Curran & husband Hack, Mary Howard & husband Joe and Lovie Trexler, brother-in-law Newton Cohen & wife Marilyn & daughter Deborah, sister-in-law Alice Cohen Waddell & husband Harry.

Survivors include her loving sister Hazel Trexler-Campbell & husband Vince of Rockwell, sons Christopher Young Cohen of Salisbury, Tim L. Cohen & wife Susan of Woodleaf, grandchildren Zachary Andrew Cohen & wife Corey of Monroe, Whittney Cohen Ferguson & husband David of Commerce, Texas, Noah Nicholas Aaron Cohen of Salisbury, great grandchildren Savannah Grace Cohen, Zachary Andrew Cohen II, Andrew Cohen Ferguson, Nathan James Ferguson, Lydia Mae Ferguson and Luke David Ferguson.

Visitation will be at Summersett Funeral Home on Saturday, April 20 at 10 am. The service will be at 11 am in the Summersett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Trexler officiating. The burial will follow at Enon Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Enon Baptist Church of 1875 Enon Church Road in Salisbury, NC 28147.

The family would like to give special thanks to Alicia Ennis, Wanda Eudy, Deborah Coleman and Karen Huff for their loving care to Miss Ruby for the last two years and to Trellis Supportive Care for making her last days peaceful.
