Jake Horrocks Obituary

Jake B. Horrocks
April 19, 1984 ~ April 9, 2016
Jake B. Horrocks, 32, our beloved son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin and best friend, unexpectedly passed away April 9, 2016. We love you Jake and while our hearts are broken we will forever hold you close …. For those of us who had the privilege of knowing Jake, we know how selfless, kind-hearted and compassionate you were. He left an imprint on everyone he ever met with his incredibly contagious laugh, big bear hugs and easy going way of understanding your soul. Jake was a man that could find no fault in anyone, he listened intently, cared beyond words and always found a creative way to make you laugh and smile. It would only take a few moments with him and you would know that he immediately had love for you.
Jake was born April 19, 1984 to Bret W. Horrocks and Marlisa Sorensen. He grew up in West Jordan, Utah just down the street from his cousins whom he often went camping and fishing with and became very close to. Jake had an incredible love for all of his family and wanted nothing more than to be with them. He carried a special place in his heart for his mom, dad, siblings and especially for his two nieces, Lucy Lou and Ryan Rose. Jake learned to play baseball with his brother and West Jordan friends and he often told everyone that he could hit a baseball much better than his older brother, which was true. Jake loved to go fast, fast cars and fast motorcycles. He often went riding with his Dad and family friends out to Dell and the West Dessert. There wasn't a single machine that burned gas that he couldn't expertly operate and he pushed the limits on all of them. He always wanted to drive; to see how fast he could go and he usually found it. After finishing school at West Jordan High, Jake spent some quality time living in Texas with his mom and sister. He loved hanging out with his little sister, Whitney, where he provided solid direction, mentorship and inspiration to her. During this period, they learned a lot about life together, some good, some bad but mostly they learned to laugh together, they laughed at everything. After spending a little time in Texas, Jake decided to follow his brother's and grandfather's footsteps and joined the armed services. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 2005, completed boot camp and became a member of the 130th Engineering and Installation Squadron. It was here that he developed a large interest in networks, fiber optics and trouble-shooting systems. In a very short amount of time, Jake became very good in this line of work. It never mattered what he was working on, he was extremely talented and did it well. He proudly served a six-year commitment with the 130th EIS prior to leaving the military in 2011. He always had a lot of love for his Squadron and the people he served with. "Once a Wizard, Always a Wizard".
Jake found solace in many things but nothing affected him more deeply than music and his love for nature. He had a great love for the sound of a guitar, he loved the "air drums" and enjoyed anyone jamming on a piano. He would often get stuck on a song and listen to it over and over. One of these songs was Lynyrd Skynyrd's - Simple Man. The lyrics to this song are very fitting for Jake, "Take your time, don't live too fast, troubles will come and they will pass - be something you love and understand- be a simple kind of man".
We can't express how much we love and will miss you Jake. You will forever be in our hearts! Until we meet again.

I graduated basic training with Jake in 05'. We would lose and gain contact over the years with one another. We sat together on the bus ride to tech school together to Mississippi from San Antonio. We celebrated his 21st birthday there where i'll never forget he snuck a shot of jaeger in my can of red bull and we toasted to his birthday. I'm extremely sad to hear of his passing. Love you bro, every time i hear Cold by Crossfade i still think of you singing it while fixing your bed in basic. It's crazy how we have thousands of people come in to our lives but only a few make a mark. Fly high Black Knight, hua!

So sorry for your loss Bret. One of the hardest things we go through in life is when our children pass before we do. I hope you can find some peace and comfort during this time.

Jake influenced so many people for the good. No matter how long it had been since seeing each other, you knew you were always his brother. This article describes him so well and I look forward to the day that I can see him again and be able to laugh about everything and yet nothing at the same time. You'll be missed greatly my friend.
