Michael Wheaton Obituary

1949~2014
Salt Lake City, UT-A wonderful man passed away on Sunday, January 19 from lung cancer. Jack was the first of four children born to Oscar and Beth Smith Wheaton in Coalville, Utah on October 5, 1949. He had a wonderful childhood growing up in Coalville and shared many stories about his adventures with his kids. He met his wife Monika while attending school in Salt Lake City where they settled down and raised their family. He drove truck locally for Saia Motor Freight where he made many friends of his fellow drivers and regular customers, particularly in Utah County. He was a kind man, hardworking, with a bit of a perfectionist streak who took pride in in everything he did. He loved reading and learning about history, enjoyed model railroading and watching drag races. Jack was diagnosed with cancer one month ago. He spent the past month enjoying time with his friends and family making memories that we will cherish. Survived by his wife Monika, daughter Nicole (Eric) Meagan, son Erick (Mindy) Wheaton, granddaughter Saige, of whom he was so proud, brother Brent (Jamie) Wheaton, sisters Dee Ann (Robyn) Wilde, Cheryl (Stan) Page and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law Eva Haut. A viewing will be held at Deseret Mortuary, 36 East 700 South, on Saturday, January 25 at 1:00 with a celebration of his life from 2:00-3:00. Bring your favorite memory to share. His family would like to thank the caring staff at LDS Hospital and Utah Cancer Specialists. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jacks name to the American Cancer Society. Though seven years have passed since losing my best friend the wonderful memories and love of my friend are still strong and will always be and the sadness in my heart still burns. I never realized how much alike we were until he passed. Talking to his children at the services they told me that he talked about me often and told of our adventures and it dawned on me that I did the same with my family. We did everything together and were inseparable until the army separated us in 1970, we got drafted and were to show up at the induction center on April 7th and we did but because of a technicality they sent Jack home even though he begged them to take him because we were going in on the buddy system so we could watch out for each other. Though I was sad to leave him behind I was glad that he got to stay home because it was during the Vietnam war and I felt very strongly that one of us would not come back so I was glad that he got to stay to share our stories with friends and family. I just wanted to share a little tid-bit about a man that meant the world to me and to whom I have called my best friend that I have loved, honored and respected since we met in 1963. Jack my pal, I will see you again one day! Dee.

On behalf of my family I want to thank everyone that stopped by on Saturday to pay their respects. I think my Dad would have been surprised at how many people were there, but I'm not - he was one of those people that you couldn't help like and he made an impact on a lot of people. I miss him terribly and love him so much.

Jack, old friend and classmate, I was very sad today, as was everyone who knew you. When I remembered the many good times we had in school, a smile soon returned to my face. Jack, I'll cherish your memory. My deepest sympathy to your family.

I was a little shocked to hear about Jack. I only knew him from the many times he would haul the freight from the company where I work. He was always cheerful and in good spirits. There were many times when our freight was not ready and he never complained about having to wait. I will miss seeing and talking with him. My condolences go to his family and friends.

Jack delivered freight to my dock daily for 15+yrs, over that time we became friends. Jack is kind, hardworking, fun and full of energy. It always brightened my day to see him. I am grateful to his family for opening their home and arms and giving me the opportunity to visit with Jack shortly before his passing. Jacks memories will always be fond in my heart and we will be connected spirit to spirit.

I met Jack the beginning of the school year 1963 I was the new kid in the class. Jack approached me and introduced himself and we were instant friends. In a short period of time we became the best of pals and for the next 7 years we did everything together. Jack was the best friend a person could ever hope for. He was always there for me and I for him. If I didn't understand something he would teach me, if he wanted me involved in something he liked he would get me started in it (at his expense if need be). Jack was adventurous, eager, funny, serious, perfectionist, kind, loving, caring and anything good you can think of. If you were looking for a friend that was honest and true Jack was your man. I know Jack was a terrific father and a wonderful husband because he was one heck of a friend. He has been my life long Bud and will always be. I will miss the man very much. I love you Wack.
