OSCAR ROWLAND Obituary

Oscar Gerald Rowland "That's a wrap" Oscar Gerald Rowland was reunited with his beloved wife, Beverly, on Oct. 20, 2010. He passed away due to injuries sustained from a fall the previous day. He was born March 27, 1926 to Oscar Joseph and Texanna Smith Rowland in Salt Lake City, Utah where he resided throughout his youth. He worked in the family grocery store on Seventh East with his younger brother, Glenn, until he graduated from high school. Immediately after graduation he entered military service at the age of 18. Several months later in the winter of 1944, he found himself in Ardennes, Belgium, fighting the Battle of the Bulge with General Patton's Third Army. Soon after he returned from the war he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the South Africa Mission. Following his mission he married Beverly Booth, July 21, 1949. Oscar owned and operated LaGalerie Gifts and the Red Apple Restaurant for many years. His proudest professional accomplishments were as an actor on stage, screen and television. People would often come up to Oscar in public and say, "Don't I know you?" Some of his favorite movie roles were the grandfather in "Easter Dream" and as a leper in "The Testament". Above all else, Oscar was most proud of his family. He loved his wife, his children and all of his posterity dearly. He often expressed this love while sharing his testimony in church and private settings. Oscar's greatest legacy to us is his unshakable faith in our Savior Jesus Christ and his testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Oscar and Beverly are survived by their five children: Rebecca Sue (Pete), G. Kim (Marlene), Reed (Sandra), Robert (Sandy), and Richard (Anita). They are also survived by 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the Federal Heights LDS Chapel (1300 E. Fairfax Rd., Salt Lake City, Utah). There will be a viewing Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Mortuary (3115 E. Bengal Blvd., Cottonwood Heights, Utah 801-943-0831), as well as one hour prior to services on Saturday. Interment at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery.

Dear Rowland family: My deepest sympathy to all of you.
I appreciate your call and am sorry I was out of town that weekend, visiting my daughter Sharisa in Illinois. Your message was on my machine when I returned on Monday. I am saddened to hear of Ger's passing but know he is happy to be reunited with Bev. Just imagine what plays they will be performing for the Heavenly Hosts!

Dear Rowland Family:
Your parents were good neighbors and friends and we loved them both. So sorry to hear your Dad has had his last curtain call. We hope you can find peace during this time of grief.

October 25, 2010

Dear Family of Jerry and Bev,

I am very sad to learn of this unexpected loss you are bearing in the passing of your Dad. Jerry and your Mom have been friends for many years, as well as a great support to us at the Avalon Theatre and Video. All the Dent and Rowland cousins adopted Art and me as more cousins and we enjoyed many things together. I have not been able to know you kids except from afar. The last time I visited with your Dad was at Margaret's graveside ceremony . Rebecca, it was nice to get to know you better that morning.

I offer you my deep condolences in this loss and express my regret that I did not know in time to support you and honor Jerry by being at the viewing and funeral. You will be in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Dear Family,
My husband, Stuart and I have just become aware of the passing of your dear father/grandfather and we wish to send our sympathy and love. We have known Jerry/Oscar ever since he married your darling mother/grandmother, Beverly. We are actually related, as Beverly's mother, LaVern, is my father (Rex Ward's) first cousin, and I remember visits from the family when I was a young girl.
We became better acquainted through the years as our children performed in several plays at Promised Valley Playhouse and also in a few films with both Oscar and Bev.
They were always such an example not only of acting ability, but more importantly of faith and good works. He will be greatly missed, but we know you will take comfort in the legacy he leaves and in the knowledge that you will be with him again in the eternities to come.

Elder Rowland was an example of kindness during the years we spent together in South African missionary service. I also had the pleasure of returning with him and Beverly for an African Safari. Both were a joy to be with. Norene and I are both honored to have known and loved them. Gerald was always such a gentle and considerate example during our travels. His friendship will be greatly missed. Elder J Golden and Sister Norene Barton

To the rowland Family,
I am Gerald's first cousin. The one they call Sammy, although my real name is Henry D. Smith. It was always a great pleasure visiting with your father. We were able to see each other at times when I had business in Salt Lake City or he was visiting in Virginia. We we seperated by miles of distance, but I always felt the strong ties of family.

I know the grief you are feeling. We all at some time must face the journey he has taken. Gerald was a good man. He is not alone on this trip.

My family and I send our sympathy.

Sammy

To the Rowland Family,
Many years ago I had the wonderful opportunity to perform with Oscar and Beverly at the Old Promised Valley Playhouse. What a remarkable couple!!! I remember many long conversations with Oscar and was always impressed with his deep humility and constant willingness to share his talent and wisdom. I have thought of him so many times over the years especially as I have pursued the "on stage" experiences that have enriched my life. He was (and is) a great role model and the memories of his kindness and mentoring will remain with me forever. He was a classic example of a person having the courage and faith to "walk the talk". A great man!! Dave Hill

To the Rowland Family:
While your mom and dad would not remember me, I have great fondness for them. Many years ago, before the new Church Office Building was built, there was a production of Promised Valley held on an outdoor stage east of the Salt Lake Temple. This was the mid-60's. Your mom and dad were both in that, and so was I. I've continued to follow their careers through the years, and have admired both of them for their work, and their supreme faith. I'm happy they have been reunited, although I know you will miss them...but only for a short time. They have left you a wonderful legacy.

God bless.
