Ted Bird Obituary

1951 ~ 2017
Ted (Teddy) Ray Bird, sixty-five, Ft. Mohave, AZ returned home to our Heavenly Father after losing a courageous battle with respiratory failure complicated by diabetes, April 8 at Valley View Hospital in Ft. Mohave surrounded by family.
Ted was born June 25, 1951 in American Fork, UT to Teddy L. and Elaine (Greening) Bird. He married Patricia (Pat) Nutt Boyer on March 10, 1983 in Farmington, UT. Graduating from American Fork High School in 1969, he then enlisted in the Navy serving as a crew member on the P-3 Orion searching for gun and supply boats aiding North Viet Nam and then patrolling for submarines off the coast of Guam, Japan, and our west coast. He was honorably discharged from Patrol Squadron, Forty- eight, NAS, Moffett Field, CA and transferred to Naval Reserve in 1973. Returning to Utah, Ted obtained an Associate's Degree from Utah Technical Center, serving on the board and student body president in 1974-75. He then attended Weber State University majoring in Criminal Justice. He married and divorced Dianne Howard, and this union provided him his greatest joy in life, his only child, Melissa. In 1975, he was accepted as a deputy sheriff for the Davis County Sheriff's Office and served the community twenty-four years before retiring as a sergeant in 2000. Ted loved the outdoors. Golfing, camping, fishing, shooting guns and hunting with family members and friends was his passion.
Ted is survived by his wife, Pat (Fort Mohave AZ); daughter, Melissa West (Robby) (Saratoga Springs, UT); grandchildren, Gabrielle and Hayden, Melissa's sister, Addison Van Sickle (Jamin) (Lehi, UT) brother, Martin Bird (Las Vegas, NV); sister, Ranae Murphy (Jack) (Sandy, UT); sister, Teresa Bird (American Fork, UT), nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and his extended law enforcement family. He was proceeded in death by his parents and younger brother, Charles (Chuck) (Lorraine) (Salt Lake City, UT) Bird.
Honoring Ted's wishes, no funeral services are to be held. At a later date, military honors will occur at the American Fork Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Dr. William Womack, Dr. Vikas Sayal, nurses and other staff at Valley View Hospital for the dedicated care given to Ted and the compassion and patience shown to us during one of the worst times in our lives.
In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the American Lung Association and the American Diabetes Association.

Ted was definitely a one of a kind man who lived life just the way he wanted. Fortunately for me that included taking great care of my best friend- his wife. I am certain he will be missed though I am also grateful that he is no longer suffering and can really do whatever he wants!

Ted was one of the nicest guys I knew and dated in high school. While I haven't seen him for a very long time he touched my heart and I am very sad for this loss. It looks like he found a good life , a nice family, and served our country proud. Thanks Ted for making our world a better place you are a good man. Best wishes and heartfelt sympathy to the family

Throughout my entire life I cannot remember a year that Ted was not part of my life. The year he was born Ted his father my dad's brother introduced Teddy my cousin for the first time. We were living between Dugway Utah and American Fork in the early 50's when my life was blessed with Ted as a cousin and what seemed like a brother that I did not have. Our families throughout the years visited each other for almost every holiday and other events over the years. I cannot remember how many times I was very happy to go see Teddy and his borthers and sisters at Ted and Elaines house in American Fork and also when they would visit us in Tooele. My dad and Ted's dad were hunters and enjoyed shooting as both Ted and I were. Not one time did we spend camping that we did not break out the shotguns and see who could shoot the best. Deer hunting. Pheasant hunting was a yearly planned event. Also fishing was almost a yearly event at Feron Lake. I remember before we were old enough to have a hunting license Dad and Ted would use Teddy and I as dogs to flush out the pheasants above Anerican Fork every year. I stayed overnight countless times at Ted's house as he did mine. He was a true brother to me and I feel that was what I lost. As I write this I just realized that It would be a 500 page book to say what I want and reflect on Ted's life with mine. Those of you who read this understand how I feel and can add to your life memories how we all feel on this tragic loss. Love is an understatement and only God knows because words cannot tell everything but the heart and love of God can. Teddy I will end this but really it is not the end. We will continue this latter on when I walk up to you and give you a big hug. I miss you and God Bless Kenny Bird your First Cousin and Biother at heart.

Ted was beyond a friend, he was my brother. Miles and time were the only thing separating us. We maintained continual connection and I am so grateful to our lord for giving me a chance to speak to him before he left us. We had some "epic" times and memories. Particularly at Utah Tech where was the Student Body Pres and me the Veep. We start the conversation "remember that time" and then both break into a laugh without much being said. Our hearts go out to Pat Bird. I remember the day he told me he found "the one". And to sweet Melissa. I was there with your dad when you were born. He was so proud of his beautiful girl. My Sundays are going to be a little different now. Instead of the phone, ithe conversation will be from my heart. God speed my friend, mentor and Brother! Until we meet again!
