Adolph Hoffman Obituary

January 24, 1923 - August 30, 2018
Adolph Frank Hoffman, a man of God, was born in Somerset, Texas on January 24, 1923, to Frank and Effie May Hoffman. He peacefully departed this life to enter eternity with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 30, 2018 at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Patricia "Patsy" Ruth Nelson Hoffman, his parents, two sisters and three brothers. His Legacy lives on in his five daughters and their families: Kathy Wells (Corkey), Pattie Ayers (Steve), Debbie Mc Queen (Doug), Janet Chandler (Mike) and Sharon Hoffman; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; his brother, Glenn Hoffman (Lillian); sister-in-law, Joyce Hoffman; brother-in-law, David Baxter; numerous nieces, nephews and longtime friend Guillermo "Willie" Cruz.

He graduated from Somerset High School in 1940. Excelling at football, the Bulldogs went undefeated in 1939 and 1940. He loved track and field, pole vaulting 12' with a bamboo pole, competing in the state meet his junior and senior year.

He joined the U.S. Navy in February 1943. Serving as Quarter Master during WWII on the USS Alabama, he steered the battleship through 8 major battles and a typhoon.

The greatest event in Adolph's life is when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 28.

In 1954, Adolph met the love of his life, Patricia Ruth Nelson. They married September 1, 1956. Adolph went to work for his father-in-law at NWB Foundation Company and worked there for 43 ½ years. His work in that pier foundation business included the Hemisfair Tower of the Americas, the Air Force Academy and many structures in Texas, New Mexico and Kansas.

Adolph and Patsy raised their five girls in Somerset. The family was active at Somerset Baptist Church where Adolph served as a deacon and taught Sunday School. Adolph was an original city council member in Somerset serving 10 years and leading in the incorporation of the City of Somerset. He was also a founding board member of the Somerset National Bank.

Adolph's love for sports NEVER faded. Adolph played baseball until the age of 39, and started playing again at age 80, playing nearly 15 years in the San Antonio Men's Senior Baseball league. At age 90, he played with the age 65 and up team winning a World Series ring in 2013.

At 70, Adolph began his competition in Senior Olympics. He competed in Track and Field (pole vault, high jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin, discus, shot put, and hammer throw) in National Senior Olympics meets in San Antonio, San Francisco, Cleveland, Louisville, Orlando and Houston. He was featured in the documentary, Age of Champions.

His 95 years are not measured by the many accolades he received or the many sporting events he participated in, but through the commitment to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and living daily to honor Him.

I met Adolf when I first started to compete in masters track and field, he was a great inspiration and role model to me. I will always remember his smile, his strong hand shake and hugs, and what a great and tireless athlete he was. With sympathy, Carol Finsrud

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, as a nurse he was very inspiring. I saw his story on the video, Age of Champions Senior Olympics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zIWxcFb-gE, and he seemed like an amazing man with a lot of drive. He also seemed like he lived life to the fullest. The world needs more people like him! My deepest sympathy to the family!

Adolf was always good to me and so supportive throughout my life. I did, however, need oxygen, after his hug. Smile!

Not only was Adolf special, but working with Pattie and Steve were special times. Plus I loved riding with Sharon in my convertible.

Much love, Maria Shelton

Mr. Hoffman was one of the greatest men I've ever known. His kindness, his big hugs, his love for his family and country and his constant and abiding faith in his Lord were all hallmarks of who he was. He was the real deal. He didn't just talk the talk. He walked the walk--every single day--a model for all of us. Kathy, Pattie, Debbie, Janet and Sharon: you were blessed by the best! My prayers are with you.

At every Texas State Games, Adolph would sit on our bench and cheer for the Celadrin Tigerettes with a fist full of medals hanging around his neck. To all who loved him and for whom he was an inspiration, I offer my condolences. We all shall miss this great man.
