I came to the Houston VA in the twilight of my career as a social worker and therapist. I was extremely fortunate to work with Chris. He was easily a favorite and the best all-round psychiatrist on the unit. Respectful, knowledgeable and professional. But more than that, he was a kind soul. Both to patients and staff.

Dr.Martin was an amazing physician, great colleague and a teacher. He trained me at Houston VA Hospital more than 10 years ago, but I still remember him with warmth and gratitude. Such a great loss for everyone who knew him.

Chris is one of the most genuine and loving people I've known. One of my first memories of college is Chris beating me - badly - as we both tried out for the tennis team. He was as relentless as he was humble. We only grew closer throughout college and some of my most lasting memories were formed with him; through fellowship, on the tennis court, and during my only ever trip to Pearsall. Through the tears thinking about Chris and his young family, reflecting on the memories with him has brought joy and laughter once again, just as I know Chris would have it. I’m better for having known him.

I am very sad to hear of the loss of Chris Martin. I had the joy of knowing Chris in college and having him be part of a Bible study that I led. He was a beloved friend and will be dearly missed.

Chris Martin was a good person and a good physician. We had adjoining offices for several months. He was always cheerful and positive, even when he was obviously tired. I liked to talk about cases; he liked to talk about his family. The last conversation we had was about his weekend plans with his wife and his two young sons. I miss Chris.

Chris and I had adjoining offices for a few months. He was always so pleasant, patient and interested. I liked discussing tough cases with him, because he took a real interest in the welfare of patients. He liked to talk about his family. What a wonderful person! His last words to me were about his weekend plans with his family. I really miss Chris.

Sadden to hear of the loss of DR Martin. I didn't know him personally, but I would run into him occasionally as part of my job at the VA. He never failed to say hello or ask how I was doing. I miss seeing him around the hospital. My prayers are with his family and friends.

I met Dr. Martin at one of the lowest points of my life, struggling with the loss of my father and questioning my decision to go into medicine.
He led a Psychiatry interest pathway at Baylor. A bunch of medical students flirting with the idea of becoming psychiatrists would gather in a conference room deep in the bowels of the Houston VA and Dr. Martin spoke to us about our patients, his own career path, and psychiatry in general. He talked a lot about the science and art of medicine and that saving a life (or helping make someone’s life worth living) can look a lot of different ways.
He was one of the first people who made me feel like there is a home for me in the house of medicine and one of the first people outside my family and closest friends that I opened up to about my struggles. He listened, he didn’t judge, he encouraged me to give it a chance and also told me it’s ok to quit. He inspired me to become a psychiatrist.
His impact on my life, both personally and professionally, is immense and probably was never fully known by him.
May he Rest In Peace.

Chris was a great friend and a trusted person. His sudden departure was a shock and the only comfort is that he is with the Lord now. In the hope of meeting him again, may God comfort his family. It was a true honor to work with him and to be his friend. Rest in peace, Chris.

I met Dr. Martin as an intern. I would frequently go to his workroom to meet my co-intern and try to de-stress from the day. One day, Dr. Martin joined us, he saw me overwhelmed, also dealing with some personal issues and shared with me that he too felt overwhelmed throughout his education. He shared that after his graduation, he bought a medallion of St. Jude and would always carry it with him to remind him of why he became a doctor and get through this day. That night I bought a medallion of my own and I would always think of his story when I see it. Now, it brings me great strength, courage and inspiration, all thanks to him.

Dr. Martin was one of the best attendings I have ever had. He was an inspiring educator and a masterful clinician. He cared so much for his patients and his students, and his enthusiasm for teaching was unparalleled. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. What an unbearable loss so early in life.
