Dorothy Sue Hobson Gibson
February 24, 1943 - August 19, 2023
Dorothy was born to Isabelle June and Albert Gordon Hobson in Greenburg, Indiana. She spent most of her youth in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
She attended Oklahoma State University and Phillips University, where she completed a degree in education.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, her many aunts and uncles, and her beloved grandson, Trevor Scott Duff.
Dorothy married L. Tucker Gibson, Jr., in 1963, and she missed by 13 days celebrating their 60th anniversary on August 31, 2023.
She was the mother of three wonderful daughters – Katherine Lee Duff (Scott), Karen Elizabeth Cutler, and Anne Tucker Gibson-George (David, now deceased). Her five grandchildren- Madelyn, Jared, Emma, Victoria, and Grace - gave her a great deal of joy as she watched them develop into loving and caring adults.
Dorothy's career centered on education. She taught in the Head Start program in Charlottesville, Virginia, in the racially tumultuous years of massive resistance the 1960s and finished in the Edgewood ISD.
She experienced a massive stroke in 2006 that impacted her mobility and speech, but for seventeen years with the help of her caregivers, she worked on recovery based on the science of plasticity, using the tools of Constraint Induced Movement Therapy. On the day that she experienced a second stroke that took her life, she was working with therapists on standing and occupational therapy. She impressed others with her perseverance and tenacity working on recovery to the very end.
A special note of thanks goes to Arlene Aguilar, Elizabeth Coffee, Pia Gabriel, Jorge Garza, and Debra Gonzalez who were her loving caregivers for many years.
Dorothy, derived from Greek, means "gift of God." From descriptions in your condolences and cards, it is very clear that Dorothy's personality and life had an impact on so many. Her life was a gift to many and truly a gift of God.
After the stroke, many will remember Dorothy's parting words when she was ending a conversation – "Well, I enjoyed you." So much of her love for people and life is encapsulated in this simple statement.
An expanded narrative of her life can be found on Porter Loring's website.
If you care to, celebrate Dorothy's life through a memorial to an educational institution. She had an interest in the Children's' Center at University Presbyterian Church which supports students through its Good Shepherd Scholarship Fund.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on September 9, 2023, at 2:00 pm at University Presbyterian Church, 300 Bushnell.
