HANS NADLER Obituary

Hans Beat Nadler, age 91, of San Antonio, passed away peacefully at his home on January 1, 2022 of natural causes.

Mr. Nadler was born on September 10, 1930 to Johann and Therese Nadler in Zug, Switzerland. As a young man he apprenticed as a Pastry Chef and served in the Swiss Army before immigrating to the United States.

Shortly after arriving in this country in 1953, he was conscripted and joined the US Army. While stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, he met the love of his life, Minerva Ibarra. Upon his release from the military, Hans and Minerva began their married life in Long Island, New York where he resumed his baking career.

In 1961, he pursued an opportunity to open and manage the in-store bakeries of local San Antonio supermarkets, 'Carol Ann Pastry Shoppe' in Piggly Wiggly and 'Cinderella Cake Shoppe' in Handy Andy. This allowed him to present his artistry and European style of baking and pastry making. In 1963, he leased space from a local delicatessen and founded 'Cream Puff Bakery.' Supporting Hans on the acquisition of the delicatessen, Minerva joined the business on a full-time basis. They were inseparable and worked long hours side-by-side. Nadler's Bakery and Delicatessen - and all its versions throughout the years - was born of their commitment. In all the years that followed, Hans credited much of his success to the dedication of his lovely Minerva.

In this amazing family business, brothers, sisters, children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren helped run and sustain the business. A number of them started their first jobs at Nadler's where they learned invaluable lessons in dedication, hospitality and customer service.

For more than 30 years, Hans served as a member of several professional associations, including positions on the boards of directors. He also served as president and received various awards of achievement and recognition. These included the Retail Baker's Association (RBA), the Greater Southwest Retail Baker's Association (GSWRBA) of which he was a founder, the Texas Restaurant Association (TRA) and the San Antonio Restaurant Association (SARA). He served on the Advisory Board for St. Phillip's College.

Known as the Nadler Workshop Team, he and Minerva conducted many seminars and workshops at Texas A&M, for the GSWRBA in Texas and surrounding states and at RBA conventions throughout the U.S. He was recognized for his community involvement at the local and state levels, receiving the Key to the City of San Antonio and a Proclamation from Bexar County naming November 19th to be Nadler's Bakery & Delicatessen Day.

His role of consultant, advisor, and trainer in the baking industry included an RBA delegation to Central and South America (CIPAN). He also monitored the trends in Europe for the Union International of Bakers/Confectioners. This position took him around the world and Hans and Min traveled to as many as 40 countries to fulfill his responsibilities. He had a profound commitment to serve in the unification of the world's bakers, for improvement of the quality of bakers' work, and for promoting fellowship among bakers. He served as President for 2 terms. He dedicated a great part of his time for the benefit of the profession. He worked to strengthen the institutions of bakers around the world and ultimately generated unity among bakers in Europe and the Americas.

Due to his efforts and the respect of his colleagues throughout the world, he was honored with the International Baker of the Year Award in 2011, created by the UIB. It is the most prestigious honor from the baking industry worldwide. He was nominated in Brazil, approved in Poland and received the award in Verona, Italy. With children and grandchildren in tow, Hans and Min embarked on a road trip through Switzerland, France, and Italy on the way to receiving his award.

Hans was a devout Catholic, a member of the Knights of Columbus and served many years as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a humble man and created many lasting friendships worldwide. He enjoyed jazz music, traveling, and snow skiing… interests he passed on to his children and grandchildren.

The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation for all the prayers, condolences and support for the loss of their beloved patriarch. He will be fondly remembered, loved by many, and truly missed.

Hans is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Minerva; daughter Sharon (Shawn), daughter Alexia (Isaac) and son Rainer; grandchildren Johann (Ellen), Laynie (Edward), Andre, Lexie, Ari; 4 great grandchildren; sister Magda (Rudy); and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by brothers Harry and Rainer.

Visitation will be held January 24, 5-8 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary North. January 25, a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 11:30 am and Mass of Christian burial at 12:00 pm will take place at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment will follow at 2:15 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are Rainer Nadler, Shawn and Johann Ash, Andre and Ari Nadler-Torres, and Isaac Mendez.
