John Canby Obituary

29 September 1929 - 15 July 2017
COL John P Canby died on 15 July 2017 after living a full and rewarding life. Born in Aurora, Colorado, to BGEN Clarence and Beverly Canby on 29 September 1929, John loved adventure and helping others. Upon graduating from Vanderbilt University, he joined the Army and found his greatest joy was healing sick children. From riding elephants in India to surveying Papua New Guinea jungles, riding in B Troop reenactments to challenging his War College colleagues, John found the Army to be an adventure that also allowed him to help thousands of children, as a Pediatrician and later as Commander of hospitals in the US and abroad. He married the love of his life and accomplished athlete, Margaret Johnson. They have three children, John Jr, Bob, and Charlee, who have survived him. John loved his children and grandchildren, enjoyed playing and refereeing tennis, making new friends, and volunteering his time. Services will be at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway at noon, 28 July 2017, with interment at FSH National Cemetery at 1:30pm. A full obituary can be seen at www.SunsetFuneralHomeSA.

Margaret and family, Doctor J, as i always called him was quite a guy.He always looked so young and fit to include being a super officer and gentleman. Men like DR. J should not pass, but we have no control in this short and final stay. I will cherish the play we enjoyed in tennis. we will all miss him. Take care, NORMAN and RUTH. Brenda also enjoyed the fun and play.

Margaret, I am thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. John clearly was a leader in all that he did and made such a difference in so many people's lives. As you have said, John loved his medicine, his country and his family. I would add that he loved all that he did with tennis whether it was officiating, watching you play, being involved on all committees and boards regarding tennis. I knew him in this arena. May God bless you and your family.

Margaret,

John meant so much and did so much for me and my family over the years. I count John as one of the truly good men I have known in my life. Like you, John was so generous with his time and selflessly did so much for the tennis community. He is in God's hands now but he is in our hearts forever. You have our prayers and our love.

Margaret and family, Words are so inadequate at this sad time because your loss is so great and because your husband/father will be missed in so many ways. John was such a special man. His devotion to all of you was evident in what he said and did. May the quiet places of your heart be filled with sweet echoes of John's love for you.

words are so hard to come by at a time like this. May God's loving arms enfold you and your family in your time of grief. John was a wonderful person and I am so thankful I had the pleasure of knowing him for so long a time. It was so special to be on his "championship" mixed doubles team and winning a National Title in Kansas City. Now he is taking the game to a higher level. He will be missed and always be in my best memories.

May God's loving kindness and comfort help you and your family through this very sad time Psalms 29:11
