Manuel Vara Obituary

VARA
Manuel C. Vara was born January 25, 1925 in San Antonio, Texas. He passed away peacefully with family and friends by his side at his home Friday, September 9th, he was 86 years old. After graduating high school from Fox Tech he volunteered to enter into the United States Army during World War II and served 2 ½ years in the Pacific Theatre till the war's end. After an honorable discharge from the service he married the girl of his dreams, Mary Anne in May 1949. They were married 58 years, had three sons, six grandchildren, and one great grandson. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 31 years rising to the position of Postmaster. After retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, he worked at the Bexar County Courthouse as the Bexar County Mental Health Officer. Manuel enjoyed the outdoors, dancing with Mary Anne, visits with friends and meeting new people. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed "Compadres" at Mi Tierra, affectionately known as the "Snake Pit" gang. In 1982 he was elected Mayor of Grey Forest. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Anne; his sisters Alicia and Fela; his brother's Rudy, Salvador, Hector and Joe. He is survived by his three sons, Manuel A. Vara, wife Eileen, Edward A. Vara, wife Corine, Mark A. Vara, wife Susan. Grandchildren Kerith A. Stanton (Cody), Christina M. Vara (Matt), Sara Anne Busti (Joe), Ashley M. Vara, Tyler C. Vara, Mikaela M. Vara. Great grandson Aiden R. Busti. His brother Gilbert Vara Sr., sisters-in-law, Dolores Villarreal, Henrietta Vara, Alicia Vara, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would also like to offer a special thanks to Dr. Jerald Winakur, his nurse Allison and the loving and caring staff of Vitas Hospice, as well as a special thanks to those who cared for him after his wife's death: Nancy Benitez, Aida Mellard, and Carmen Gomez. Finally, we express to God our thanks and gratitude to the residents and staff of Villa de San Antonio for making our dad's final year on earth, one that was filled with grace and peace. Visitation will begin Thursday at 5:30 P.M. in The Angelus Chapel with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. Funeral Mass will be offered Friday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Luke's Catholic Church. Our deepest sympathy to the Manuel Vara family. We have lost a jewel of a person. My Mom Rose Granata Granieri went to school with Manuel at Tech and he worked at our subpostal station for years and then I worked with him at the courthouse. We all should live our life as beautiful as he did. He will be greatly missed. Janice Granieri Hobbs and Richard and Rose Granata Granieri and Johnny
