Nathaniel Tippit Obituary

Nathaniel George Tippit, M.D. Dr. Tippit was born on January 28, 1927 in Reno, NV to Alvin Joseph and Thelma Ellerbe Tippit. He was raised in Monroe, LA and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He received a Congressional appointment to the Naval Academy and attended preparatory classes at Columbia University. At the end of the war he elected to return home and attend medical school at Louisiana State University where he received his M.D. degree in 1950. Dr. Tippit interned at Santa Rosa Hospital in 1951 and established his home and family in San Antonio. He practiced as a GP until 1957 when he accepted a surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He served as Chief Resident to Dr. James Priestly in 1961 and was a founding member of the Priestly Society in honor of that great surgeon. Dr. Tippit became a Board Certified general surgeon in 1964. Dr. Tippit moved to Las Vegas, NV in 1971 as the house physician for the newly built MGM Grand Hotel. He practiced in Nevada until his retirement in 1985. He was a fine gentleman in many ways who came a very long way from his humble beginnings. He opened many doors for his children through his fundamental belief in education. Dr. Tippit is survived by his six children: Dr. Nathaniel G. Tippit, Jr. of Houston, Dr. Thomas Ellis Tippit of Naples, FL, Terrance M. Tippit of Houston, Dr. Taffi Sue Tippit of Houston, John Tippit of San Antonio and Ursula Couch of North Carolina. He has 12 grandchildren and was preceded in death by his two lifelong friends, Lonnie Hampton and Dr. Claire Langner. Dr. Tippit was interred next to his beloved mother, father and two brothers on August 21, 2004 in West Monroe, LA. For those desiring, contributions in his memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
