Patrick Chumney Obituary

June 20, 1933 - October 4, 2016
Patrick Swearingen Chumney was born in San Antonio on June 20, 1933 and passed away on October 4, 2016 at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Candes Parker Chumney, his children Victoria Chumney (Helen Holdsworth), Niles Chumney, and Roxana Chumney; grandchildren Maxwell Westheimer, Preston Westheimer, Cisco Rosado, Ana Lucia Chumney, Chris Haff and Gabby Haff, his sister-in-law Betty Chumney, cousin Patrick Henry (Harry) Swearingen, sister and brother-in-law Page and Lyman Webb and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas Chumney Sr., Winifred Swearingen Chumney, his brother William Thomas Chumney Jr. and beloved cousin, Dorothy (Peaches) Brewer Chubb.

After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, he attended The University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He earned a degree in Architecture and launched a lifelong career in the field. Pat's talent as an architect can be seen in noteworthy buildings in the area such as the restoration of the Texas General Land Office on the grounds of the state Capital, the Frost Bank Tower, the H-E-B Arsenal corporate headquarters, the UTHSC Dental School, Trinity University and the development of the San Antonio Museum of Art, just to name a few. Among his other achievements, he was a gold star Lt. Commander in the Navy, as well as a pilot by the age of 15.

Above all, Pat loved his wife Candes, his family, fishing, opera, gardening, memories of Hawaii and spending time in Port Aransas. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his love of life, his dry sense of humor and acerbic wit, a keen intelligence and most importantly, his love of his grandchildren.

He was a past President of The Order of The Alamo, a member of The Argyle Club, The Conopus Club and The German Club.

Honorary pallbearers are Frank Amaro, George Ames, Richard Calvert, Joe Hammond, James Hunt, Jack Pew, Harry Swearingen, Frank Duperier, Lewis Tarver, Gaines Voigt, and Fred Riley and the past Presidents of the Order of the Alamo.

Services will be held on Friday, October 7th at 10:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church, 510 Belknap Place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice with special consideration given to your favorite museum.

I was just thinking about Pat Chumney this evening. What sparked my memory was the Gershwin concert music I was playing. In the early 1990s Pat generously provided me with a studio space within his architecture office on Avenue B. I had the room directly above the stair from Pat's office. One day he came up and asked me what I was playing on my little stereo set. I apologized, thinking that I should have been more quiet. But Pat interrupted me, telling me it was the most beautiful thing he'd heard in some time. He meant it, of course and I made it a point right then to gift him a copy of that compact disc. I realized after his passing that he was much too modest for someone with his range of aesthetic appreciation, his broad grasp of all things architectural, his easy ability to connect with anyone, and of course his wonderful sense of humor. Like so many other people I have known with exceptional abilities, he never spoke much about himself. He was much more interested in who you were and what your interests were. A classic gentleman.

I was an associate in Pat's firm in the mid 80's. He was a true mentor to me, providing valuable advise regarding my career. He was a great story teller, and I very much enjoyed our conversations during drives to Corpus Christi to meet with our HEB client. A really special man. Both he and his family will be in my prayers and thoughts.

Candes - Eric and I just heard about Pat and wanted to let you know that we are thinking of you and of him. I am sorry that we didn't have the opportunity to spend more time together in recent years - you were such good friends to Gaines and Lois. I hope Pat and Lois meet up and get the party started for the rest of us.

Thinking of you,

I have fond thoughts of Pat for the man he was even as early as his college days at the University of Texas. May Pat RIP.

Candice:
I am so sorry to hear of Pat's passing. I admired him as an architect back to when I first got out of college and worked for him at Bartlett Cocke & Associates. It was nice to reconnect with him in the recent past. I am sorry to not be able to attend his service. We are out if town until Sunday. Martha and my prayers are with you.
