Philip Stotter Obituary

April 9, 1941 - June 21, 2019
Philip L. Stotter, age 78, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019. He was born April 9, 1941 to Meyer and Rose Starkman Stotter. Raised in South River, N.J., he received his B.A. from Harvard in 1963, and his Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from Columbia University in 1968. Dr. Stotter taught Chemistry at UT-Austin, subsequently was Professor of Chemistry at UTSA from 1974 -2002, and a Visiting Scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory for several years thereafter.
Phil was a wine lover; he had an impeccable palate, knew the related chemistry and was a consultant for several amateur winemakers.
He had been suffering from dementia, which became evident less than two years ago. His physical health declined significantly within the past month, and he succumbed to respiratory failure. The family expresses gratitude to the staff of Heartis Senior Living for their devoted care during the last months of his life.
Dr. Stotter is survived by his wife, Debra Weiss, his sister Ernestine Austen, two nephews, two grandnieces and two grandnephews. He was laid to rest in New Jersey on June 24, 2019. Arrangements with Porter Loring North. A Memorial Celebration of Phil's life is pending.

Phil was my mentor at the University of Texas at Austin from 1970 to 1973. This wasn´t in chemistry but comparative literature, which just shows what an inquisitive and wide-ranging mind he had. I was a freshman when I signed up for his acting seminar-quite by chance since I wasn´t particularly interested in theater, and it was the only seminar that was open. He had studied acting in New York as a diversion from his graduate program in chemistry at Columbia, and he stayed devoted to the craft and the humanities in general. It was one of the liveliest courses I took. After my freshman year I would often stop by his notoriously cluttered office in the chemistry department for long discussions on literary matters-especially poetry, which he himself practiced with some flair. Phil sponsored me in UT´s Junior Fellows Program and served as my advisor on independent studies concerning poetic translation, which he absorbed as avidly as I did. I´m certain that he championed my election to Phi Beta Kappa, since it was a complete surprise to me. He loved Austin, but I think his eclecticism got him in trouble with his department, which is why he ended up in San Antonio. We continued to talk at length by phone after I moved to New York and later Cambridge, Mass. He was a lovely guy, I owe him a lot, and I shall always cherish his friendship.
