Emmett was a child prodigy on the piano, studying in a French music school in New Jersey as a young boy. He started touring when he was seven years old, playing 40 concerts before the age of nine.

In 1947, he attended The Juilliard School, where he was awarded a full scholarship and studied with Beveridge Webster and Sascha Gorodnitzki. He graduated from Juilliard with his Bachelor's Degree in 1952 and his Master's degree in 1957, both in Piano. He won numerous musical awards and honors, including the Juilliard Concerto Competition. As a winner of the Martha Baird Rockefeller Foundation Award, Emmett played solo concerts in New York City's Town Hall and Carnegie Hall. Other awards include two consecutive G. Schirmer prizes, the Olga Samaroff award for best performance at the Juilliard School, the Frank Damrosch Award for graduating first in his class at Juilliard (musically and academically), and the Morris Loeb Award for achieving the highest Master's level at the Juilliard School.

Following graduation, he toured under Columbia Artist Management with The New York Philharmonic Piano Quartet. He taught Piano at Peabody College and The University of Texas at Austin, where he was the Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Piano Department. Dear Carol, I was so saddened to hear about Emmett's death but pleased by your long life together. I have very fond memories of my friendship with you at UT and also of Emmett's weekly lessons. His memorization technique and his unusual "floor practice" were very useful in my teaching.

Bill and I married in '67 and have lived in Dallas for most of those 51 years. Time seems to have gone by in a blink of an eye!

I'm sure that you will find comfort in the joy of your life together and the wonderful family you created.

Dear Carol and family,

I am so sorry to hear of Emmett's passing. His teaching was foremost in my training as a pianist. He was also a wonderful person. My heart goes out to all of you. Emmett will be remembered as a matchless pianist and teacher. I know he was proud of his wonderful family as well.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Vokes and send my heartfelt condolences to Carol, his children and grandchildren. Mr. Vokes was my piano teacher and mentor for over fifteen years (1973 on) from high school through undergraduate and graduate school. I am forever grateful for his gifted teaching as well as his many stories from years at Julliard studying under B. Webster and Sasha Gorodnitsky. Mr. Vokes was an amazing teacher! I will never forget him and strive to pass on his teachings to my own piano students today! With much gratitude,
Carolyn (Cummings) Binford

To Carol and family,

I send you my heartfelt condolences, and I grieve with you all for the loss of this great man. Never a day goes by that I don't think of him and the profound effect he had on me, not only in music making, but in how to live. He was always bigger than life to me, and to so many of his students. He affected positively everybody he met and taught and worked with.

What an amazing man! I'm sorry I never met him. I have known Meaghan for many years thru my daughter Alyx, but not had the pleasure of meeting the rest of the family.

My deepest condolences.
