Susan Gamble Obituary

August 2, 1957 - January 14, 2015
Susan G. Gamble, 57, of New Braunfels, Texas went to be with her Lord on January 14, 2015. She was born August 2, 1957 in Lynchburg, Virginia to William H. and Inez Garbee. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Susan is survived by her beloved husband of 36 years, Michael K. Gamble, of New Braunfels, Texas, her two children who filled her life with joy, Jennifer Martel (Norm) of New Braunfels, Texas and Michael K. Gamble, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas, her very much loved grandchild, Mikey Hilburn, her twin sister Deborah Stanton (Steve) of Wenham, Massachusetts, and her brother, Dr. William H. Garbee, Jr. (Deborah) of Metairie, Louisiana. Her nephew, Jeffrey K. Gamble and her niece Rachael Garbee also survive her.

Susan grew up in Danville, Virginia where she graduated from George Washington High School. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978, marrying Mike shortly afterwards. In 1980, Mike was commissioned in the United States Air Force and Susan began a 30-year trek around the United States with him. They had various assignments from California to Virginia and New Mexico to Alabama, before finally settling in San Antonio for Mike's final assignment. After his retirement she moved to the home of her dreams near New Braunfels and remained there until her death.

Despite the challenges of being an Air Force spouse and moving every two to three years, Susan was able to make an extremely successful career as a graphic artist and designer. In fact, she credited the challenge of moving so often with helping her develop a diversity of skills that enhanced her work through the years.

She worked in graphic design, traditional and digital illustration, web design, and animation, running her own business, Gamble Graphics. Her design work includes posters, product labels, brochures, national magazines, logos and advertising art. Her illustrations and animations are featured in books, pilot training courseware, and websites in cities all across the United States. Much of her work was done for the National Park Service and foundations that exist to preserve America's history and its natural beauty. Special projects included portraits of President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush, Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, and Adm. William J. Crowe, Jr. for a book about the U.S. Navy Memorial. Three highlights of her career were working as a graphic artist for the National League of Cities in Washington, D.C. and having her work published in a series of books on Spanish missions by Pentacle Press. She also designed the Air Force Combat Action Medal.

But the artwork she will be remembered for the longest is the work she did as an award-winning master designer for the United States Mint. She was the recipient of the Mint's 2008 Artist Infusion Program Award for Excellence in Design. Her 2007 Jamestown silver dollar won the prestigious international Coin of the Year Award (COTY Award) for Historical Significance for the United States of America. Among the many coins she designed are the reverse sides of the Alaska, Oklahoma and Washington state quarters, the reverses of multiple First Spouse gold coins, several portraits for the presidential dollar series, the reverse of the 2009 Lincoln penny and many commemorative coins ranging from bald eagles to the WWII code talkers.

Susan's biggest impact was on people. To know her was to love her. Friends, coworkers and acquaintances always commented on her big smile, warm heart, and willingness to help others. A diabetic from the age of 12, she was a volunteer on line counselor for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. A breast cancer survivor, she shared her experiences and encouragement with many women facing that disease. She was a passionate Christian, a wonderful wife and mother, and a friend and encouragement to many, many others.

A graveside service will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 10:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the National Cancer Society.

I was surprised to see that I had not sent a message of condolence to you when I received the email about the guest book online this morning. I, too, worked with Susan at NLC and found her to be a wonderful, genuine person. She was so talented. I marveled at the work she did for NLC and her coin design work.

I'm saddened by the death of Susan. Even though we were separated by the miles, I always felt she was with me. I miss our time together at Kirtland w/ 2 small children. Susan had such a sweet & humble personality. She will definitely be missed. My love and prayers to all of you!

Mike, I am so sorry for your loss. I still remember the day you told me about Susan's work and then showed me her latest coin and gave me one to keep. I have it with my AF coins and am often reminded of what great strength you brought to the Pentagon offices with your home life secure and strong. I know her passing is a great loss and I will pray for God's healing hands to give you and your family comfort.

I was so sorry to learn of Susan's death. She was such a very special person; so talented, so creative and such a nice, kind, thoughtful person. She and I worked together at NLC; she was responsible for many beautiful brochures and other printed materials we developed together. She was such a special person, always calm and kind, even in the middle of chaos! She loved talking about her children and her husband and living the military life. The world is diminished with her loss. My sincere condolences to her family.

To the Gamble Famiky ~~ You don't have to meet a person face to face to call them a friend. Through my association in ODST (JDRF), Susan was my friend and we shared not only the struggles and conquests of our long lives with diabetes, but also our love for our families. My heartfelt sympathies to you all.

Gamble Family: I worked with Susan at National League of Cities for a few years. Susan was always a ray of sunshine around the office, smiling and brightening everyone's day. I worked with her on a few graphics projects and she taught me so much about her art and showed what an excellent talent she was. I still have a few quarters she designed and will remember her fondly when I look at them. My condolences are with you all at this difficult time.

I met Susan through the US Mint's Artistic Infusion Program. She was incredibly helpful to me, a newcomer. As an artist, she was incredibly talented. As a person, she was always friendly, upbeat, optimistic, kind and patient. She was a selfless mentor. Susan will be greatly missed. You are all in our prayers.

Dear Gamble Family
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Susan's passing. When I was brought into the Mint's Art Infusion Program several years ago, she was the first to contact me in welcome and has selflessly given me excellent advice over the years. We all appreciate that she set the highest standards in the craft and unfailingly guided friends in how to work with the process. She will be sorely missed by all of us.

Mike, Jennifer, and Mike - I am so sorry that you have lost one of the most amazing people I have ever met. Susan was truly a rare gift to us all. She could make me laugh, no matter how bad my day had been. She was one of only two people that I ever knew that never, ever had a negative thing to say about anyone. She was my friend and she will be missed, not only by me, but by everyone that ever met her. The world is dimmer without her because she brought sunshine and a smile wherever she went. She loved you guys so much and considered her family her biggest priority and also her greatest joy.

My most sincere condolences on your loss. I am a friend of Deborah's, and although, sadly, I never met Susan in person, she was an amazing support to me throughout my own cancer treatment. Mike
Our heartfelt condolences with the passing of Susan; our prayers are with you and your family. We hope you can find comfort in the words many turn to at times like this; for we know Susan is dwelling in the house of the Lord...
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Mike (and family),
I was so sorry to hear of Susan's passing. What a sweet, sweet lady she was! I remember when you all moved in down the street from us on West Park at Randolph AFB. I would walk past your house and often see Susan working on her art in the front sun room. A visit with Susan always left me encouraged, often more educated, and impressed by her sincerity and graciousness. This world has lost a most beautiful and talented Christian woman.

May God hold you in His arms and grant you the peace that passes all understanding.

Dear Gamble Family,
I had the privilege to know Susan as a colleague in the U.S.Mint's artistic infusion Program
Susan was an exceptional artist and a very fine person.
Her designs were some of the best and cleanest of our group and she herself was a ray of sunshine.
We used to refer to ourselves, kiddingly, as the "Gemini Twins" because we shared a lot in common (Leos, lefties with a connection to the USAF etc.)and were often assigned the same assignments and occasionally shared mintings of our designs coin the same coin.
(the Braille silver commem, for one, comes to mind).
Susan was among the first AIP artists in 2004.
She was a strong advocate for the group and created numerous memorable designs that will live on.
I always told her that I thought her Bald Eagle gold coin design (2008) was among the most beautiful in American coinage.
There are very few artists who could understand and share exactly what it is that we do...Susan was among the very finest in this rare club.
More importantly her kind and beautiful nature will always brighten our hearts.
She will be missed greatly by all.

I will always be in great gratitude to Susan for all her kind encouraging words to me, as well as her generosity of her talents helping me in my own Rice Saddlery business. Susan designed my logo and did so probono when I was short on startup funds. I was in awe of her will and strength to finally achieve her dream of owning her own horse AFTER she beat cancer! I loved hearing her detailed stories of how she trained and trail rode ALONE on her young Arabian gelding. (I thought she was nuts and very brave!) What a wonderful lady, she will be missed by many. Keep swimming Susan, And trail riding!
My deepest sympathies and condolences to the Gamble family.

I had the honor and pleasure in knowing Susan through the United States Mint's Artistic Infusion Program, of which we had been inaugural members since 2004. At the annual symposiums, I came to realize what a kind and friendly person Susan was. My deepest sympathy to the family.
