Travis Winters McCown went to rejoice with the Angels in Heaven on October 17, 2017. He was born in Yoakum, Texas to Travis Preston and Hattie Violet McCown. He graduated from Edison High School, and received his Bachelor of Music and Masters of Administration Degrees from Trinity University. During the Korean conflict, he enlisted in the Air Force and joined the USAF Band of the West at Lackland and Kelly AFB. Travis taught band and orchestra in the SAISD for the next 40 years, including 29 years as the Edison High School Golden Bear Band Director. Travis was also a soloist and choir director in the United Methodist Church for 35 years. Travis is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Jane Holst McCown; three children, Travis Mark McCown and wife Deborah, daughter Mary Elizabeth Calk and husband Ethan, and daughter Martha Jane McCown; three grandchildren, Lindsey Lee Oefinger and husband Ryan, Emily Elizabeth Meadows and husband Zachary, and Christopher Curtis Calk; and one great-granddaughter, Finley Lee Oefinger. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 22nd at 2:00 pm at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 6914 Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX.

Most of my happiest memories of EHS revolve around the Band Hall. Being there was not drudgery. Being there was not just grinding it out til the next class. Being there was enjoyable. Mr. Mac was a huge part of all that, and I will be forever grateful he allowed me to be in his various bands, but especially his marching band. He didn't know it at the time, but he had a profound effect on my life, and I will be forever appreciative. And I still catch myself humming or remembering pieces of the 'Band Kids Song' at least once a day. Rest in Peace, Mr. Mac....

Renae plays clarinet and is a section leader with the Harlandale marching band and wind ensemble. Sydney plays Oboe with her middle school and will join the Harlandale band next year and join Renae. I have many memories of SAISD Orchestra activities when Travis and I were both Orchestra Directors many years ago. He was a gentle giant who was so much fun to be around. Travis had a profound influence on my life. I recently retired after 45 years of band and choir directing, teaching elementary music and piano classes. I loved every minute of it and am the proud mom of the principal trombonist of the Dallas Symphony. Did not get the luxury to know Mr. McCown for a long time, but in the short time I spent with him, I noticed a couple of things: 1. The love his daughters had for him, which tells me what a great father he was to see his daughters with him all the time during his hardest time. 2. The fight this man gave despite the odds and despite the pain and difficulty he was having, he always gave me his best effort which tells me a lot about the strength of his character

He walked into our band class (Whittier Jr High, late 1965) and said he was teaching a month-long session in June to introduce band members to Edison Marching Band. He would teach us to march (NOT just stand around on the field) and play (NOT just while standing still), and after a month we'd put on a "half-time show" for our parents. Two hours a day in June 1965 I attended, with more than few of my friends, and it was so much fun I went in '65 and '66, and decided to go to EHS instead of Jefferson, JUST to be in this man's band. For 3 years, this incredible man gave me probably my best memories of high school, and let me be in his various other bands. Had I gone to Jefferson I would not have met my (future) wife, Cathy. We would not have had our children. We would not have our grandkids. This man changed my entire life, and I am grateful for this man every day of my life. EVERYDAY. Not a day has passed since I graduated that I do not think about this wonderful, wonderful man. If he has touched as many lives, in as many positive ways, as he has mine, he truly has innumerable "Stars in His Crown". And I will always remember him looking at me, while directing, and motioning with his other hand to say, "Not so loud".......Thank You, Mr. Mac, for being you, and letting us be us. Heaven has received a great, GREAT man.

Mr Mac was one of the most influential men I ever knew. He created an atmosphere at the Band Hall that made us all want to spend more time there to grow as musicians, create good memories and build lifetime friendships. He was the great Instructer who inspired us to do better, scolded us at times when we needed it, at worst calling us a bunch of knuckle heads. :). His devotion to our success was without measure. I will always be grateful to him for all he did including the many rides home and arranging for me to go to Drum Major camp. To Mr. Mac's family - thank you for sharing him with all us "Band Kids".

Billy Graham you were not, you were a million times better. You were there in my most painful insecure day to day life fleshing out the love of God through Christ Jesus down in the trenches with us. My Dad, very much like Mr. Mc.loved God with all his heart his family and others, was torn from me by a massive heart attack the back half of my sophomore year just 16 years old. Mr Mc had what seemed like the whole marching band (I was part of the drum section) attend my Dad's funeral. In two other major decisions for my life during the following two and a half years my mother sent me to Mr Mack for the Godly counsel she knew he would give to me , because she knew of his love and heart for the Lord was just like my Dad's. I was so insecure after my Dad's death but God lovingly placed your husband, your Dad in my life as a strong, faithful, Godly anchor and influence in my life, at least during my school hours. He was the closest thing I had to a Father those last two years.
One of the choices he helped me decide, I had a scholarship to go to a drama college or Nursing. I graduated from UT School of Nursing and served about eleven years as a school nurse where with each student that came into the clinic I used one of the most Beautiful ways to show another person that they are a person of worth and value that he taught me by his example; was that when I would come to talk with him he would set aside whatever he was doing have me sit down then turn his chair/himself totally in my direction, lean forward and look full in my face and helped me believe that at least for just that moment I was a person of worth and value. Thank you sharing him with all of us.

Every time I reminisce with friends about "old school times", Mr. Mac is NEVER left out! My first band director in my first year in public high school and my only year at Edison!! Mac taught me a love and appreciation for the trombone, against my wishes to join the percussion section! I was privileged to see Mr. Mac during the next decades at football games and parades, He never forgot who I was! What a guy!! I am honored to have known him and will never forget him!

Having been in the Marching band beginning 1972, playing saxophone, to graduating in 1975 as a twirler, I count myself as a very blessed individual to have had Mr. McCown for 4 years at Edison High School. He was always so charitable with praise, and so incredibly patient. A wonderful man, a person that was always there with a smile and positive word. He made music fun and Band was like a family. I have been reading all of these condolences and testimonies to this wonderful man. I graduated in 63 and was honored to have been a member of the Golden Bear Band for those three years! McCown's Band is what we called it in one of our songs! We always felt this man's love for us and we loved him in return! So many life lessons I learned from him and was so fortunate to have been friends with him all my life. His love of music he shared with me and I was able to share this with my children and grandchildren. All band kids! I first saw him when my grandmother took me to a parade. I was in awe of the band and when he smiled and waved to me that day, I knew I wanted to be a member of the Golden Bear Band.

I will forever be grateful he let me fulfill my dream of not only playing in Marching Band but Stage Band as well.

One of my favorite memories was when he cued us to play Make Me Smile. He did so by pointing to his wonderful smile.

As a senior in 1968 at Edison High School I was looking for an easy senior year academically before graduating. I was placed in what officially was Orchestra Band and what some would call "B" Band. Mr. McCown made it a lot of fun and educational in how to read music and play an instrument (coronet) which I had never done before. He was a great teacher and one of those I have never forgotten. I'm very honored to have known Mr.Mac.at Edison in the 1970s as a Honey Bear and then as President of that organization my senior year to work closely with him on halftime shows.What a good, talented,patient man!!My sincerest condolences to the whole McCown family.
