Travis Singleton Obituary

SINGLETON
Travis M. Singleton, 93, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Born June 26, 1920, in San Antonio, Texas, Travis was the second eldest child of the late James and Adele Singleton. On June 7, 1941, Travis and sweetheart Lucy Eileen Coward married in Charlotte, Texas.
He was a self-made man. His work career began as a child, when he served as a caddie at local San Antonio golf courses, earning five cents daily. During the Great Depression he found work with the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), a soil revitalization plan created by Franklin D. Roosevelt's "New Deal." Travis served with the famed 44th Infantry Division during WWII, and returned home a decorated hero. Singleton found his life's calling as a lumberman, after he and his brother Bob created Singleton Brothers Lumberyard in 1949. A compassionate man, Singleton was a beloved member of his community. He was instrumental in raising funds to help build South San Civic Center. Yearly the community relied on him to sponsor many little league teams. He helped neighbors to build homes by never charging them interest on materials purchased, and by allowing them to "pay-as-you-can." Singleton was pillar of hope for his community. He is survived by: Brothers Bob, Johnny, and Stanley Singleton, and "sister" Betty Vacek. Carol and Ellwood Rangnow. Penny Bombardier. Duane Singleton. Cleo and Roy Gomez. Ruth Singleton. Gwen Singleton. Jamie, Mark and Seth Hastings. Sonny, Kristi, Braden and Brice Bishop. Chris and Shannon Swalm. Hailee Swalm. Kyndal and Tucker Tripp. Mark Swalm. Roy, Eli, and Mariel Gomez. Funeral services are scheduled for Mission Park Funeral Chapels South on April 26 at 11 a.m., with the burial immediately following at Mission Burial Park South. A reception will be held at Maggiano's Restaurant, 17603 IH 10 W, 1 - 4 p.m. In lieu of sending flowers, donors may contribute to either organization: Vet TRIIP: P.O. Box 460902, San Antonio, Texas, 78246. Triple H Equitherapy: 791 Backhaus Road, Pipe Creek, Texas, 78063. Equessense Therapeutic Horse Play: 6062 Youngsford Road Marion Texas, 78124. Singleton's favorite quote and scripture: "You're only as good as your word." Proverbs 22: 2. "Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all." Uncle Travis,
You were my favorite uncle and very dear to me. Aunt Eileen was very special and dear to me also. When I came to visit as a child and when I was an adult with children of my own, I would always walk down from Aunt Erin's to visit you and Aunt Eileen. I was always welcomed to your home with love and kindness. You were always smiling and making jokes, both of you were good to me. You will be missed. You and Aunt Eileen will remain in my heart and I will always have wonderful memories of you both! Mary Kay, your niece

You were a one of a kind Uncle to all of us Nieces and Nephews, there in South San, when we were little. Taking us to wiggle our toes in the sand in Somerset, to letting us practice driving skills out on the red dirt roads! We were always looking to see if Uncle Travis was coming to pick up our cousins, so we might get an invite to go wiggle our toes in the sand! In later years, you were always there with all of our family, enjoying each other and helping anyway you could. Always a smile on your face! We all loved to be together, spending time down at Port Aransas, most every summer. You loved taking boat rides, as well as watching the fish catches come in. We all loved you very much and know you loved us back just as much! We will miss you forever! We know you are in a better place now! Say some prayers for the rest of us down here, now that you have some pull up there! Love you forever-n-ever! Miss you, miss you, miss you, until we see you again... Dawn & Louis
