BELINDA BENCOMO Obituary

BENCOMO, BELINDA October 19, 1962 to June 14, 2011 Bencomo-Sirois, Belinda, devoted wife, mother, friend, life-long swimmer, lover of life and people, passed away on June 14, 2011, after a heroic 11 year battle with cancer. Born in El Paso, Texas on October 19, 1962, Belinda attended grade school in El Paso and Judson Preparatory School in Scottsdale, Arizona. She graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in graphic arts. Belinda met her husband Paul in 1986 in Valdez, Alaska. Prior to their marriage, they traveled around the world before getting married in San Diego, California in 1990. Aquatics was one of Belinda's lifelong passions. She began her career with the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department in 1987 as a part-time lifeguard. She later became a Recreation Specialist. Belinda and Paul have two daughters, Sophie and Céline, who share their parent's passions and sense of humor. Belinda was dedicated to volunteerism and enjoyed participating with Sophie and Céline in Sprites, a non-profit group of mothers and daughters who volunteer their time throughout the year to local charities such as Meals on Wheels and Horsemanship for the Handicapped, among many other charities. Belinda's positive outlook and appreciation for life was an inspiration to many people she encountered throughout her lifetime. She will be missed by her parents, Jaime and Emma Bencomo, her sister, Angelina Bencomo, her brother, James Bencomo (Jodi and children) and extended family in El Paso, Texas. Belinda is survived by her husband Paul, daughters Sophie and Céline and their beloved dog, Elvis. A celebration of Belinda's life is scheduled for Friday, July 22, 2011 at 2pm at the Balboa Park Club in San Diego, Ca. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be contributed to Camp Kesem UCSD (www.tinyurl.com/UCSDCK). Camp Kesem is a non-profit organization, providing children whose parents have or have had cancer an opportunity to attend summer camp free of charge.

I remember a lovely young woman who never gave up. We met while looking for a house for her parents who came to serve her needs. I was the real estate broker, and it seems very removed as a person for her to know, but she embraced friendship. She left wonderful memories for so man!

Dear Paul and family,

Belinda has been on my mind so
I finally got around to looking up her email to write a note only to discover the sad news. Belinda played such a huge part in my and Dave's life. She taught me so much while working for her in the aquatics office. She helped Dave get started in the recreation field which he is still in and loves. We have thought of you all many times from here in Florida. I am so sorry I wasn't better about keeping in touch.

My favorite Belinda moment when we had a girl's night out with Cherilyn and Kristy. We stayed at a hotel and Belinda and I shared a bed. We got tucked in and she said, :Diggy you're sleeping with the boss!" We both laughed so hard!!!

She gave me so many laughs! You all will forever be in our prayers!

Dear Belinda,
I've always thought of you as a most wonderful and loving spirit. Now you are always with me. I feel your positive presence now - always, always, so positive. You also had the ability to make whoever you were with feel your undivided attention. I just always felt pure love from you because if you weren't planning our next fun event, making your beautiful house welcoming for us, you were caring so much for what was going on in our lives and not wanting to dwell on any suffering you were experiencing. I have been so honored to be your friend. You are the example of love.

My love I give to the Sirois and Bencomo families. These people are among the the most wonderful people in the world, including one most special member, Belinda. How my life has been enriched by knowing and loving this most remarkable woman is (g)astronomical (I think most of you know what I mean!). For me, Belinda was a dear friend and of course a Betty (the Longbranch Bettys: KK, Lesa and Belinda ROCK!). "Good morning Bettys, please call me Bat Mite." The Bettys replied, " O.K. Bat Mite." I spent several years living with Paul and Belinda in Ocean Beach. They were madly in love with each other and I was madly in love with them. We did everything together: Cook and clean (well you know I wasn't the cleanest but I could help Pablo in the kitchen!), watch Pee-Wees Playhouse every Saturday morning, (Belinda once transformed Paul into "Gjambi the Genie" for a halloween party!), go to reggae concerts and surf the waves right down the street. Those were some of the best years of my life. She was an amazingly creative woman with a heart of gold. I will never ever forget Belinda's kindness, wisdom/guidance, and friendship. So many wonderful moments were spent in her light that they fill my heart and soul with love. Thank you for being part of my life, I will never forget you.

Dear Sirois and Bencomo Families: I hope you remember me, as I so well remember you. I can't begin to tell you how touched I was when I sold you the house on Briar Rd., when Belinda's wonderful parents came to La Mesa. Belinda was a most amazing woman, and I treasure her memory. She was the lovliest and you are a family of blessings to all who know you. I have thought of her so often, what a fighter she was, and how much peace she now has. She will be missed by this world. Belinda you have been an inspiration to so many. You were my first instructor at the WAVE program, you interviewed me for my first job, and you were my first ever contact with anyone who worked for the City. Now I am proud to say that 18 years later I still work for the City because of your inspiration of teaching, serving, and protecting the community. From someone that you may have thought had moved on from aquatics and forgotten about you...know that you have continued to inspire me and that there are countless more people out there who's lives you have made better. Thank you.

Belinda, what a blessing you have been to me and so many others. I still have pants and tops that you handed down from your daughters to my daughter, who is almost ready to wear them. Your thoughtfulness lives on, not just in clothes but in the character of all those you coached while you were here.
I will always remember the beauty that was always you.

Most days, I will read the online version of the San Diego Union-Tribune at SignOnSanDiego.com. Today, I found myself flipping pages of the print version when I reached the obituary section and learned that Belinda passed away. It has been years since we last saw each other, maybe fifteen or more. While I served with the PAL, she was the Aquatics Specialist with the City of San Diego Community Parks & Recreation Division. The current economic conditions that always put municipal pools, recreation centers, and libraries on the chopping block is not unique to 2011. Belinda had an amazing way of turning obstacles into opportunities while leading everyone on a joyful journey to one solution after another.

Together the San Diego Regional Police Athletic League and Belinda's aquatics team joined forces to host a Championship Swim Meet for the community pool teams. Belinda was easily one of the go to advocates for aquatics safety and teaching kids to swim in this region. To put this in perspective, It is estimated that 33,000 children ages 5-12, who live in the service area of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, have never taken swimming lessons to develop a healthy respect for the water. The pool at our Y was built before the municipal facilities at Memorial Recreation Center and Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center. Together, our pools serve over 271,000 residents living in 72,000 households. Belinda helped me understand how critical it is in a coastal region like San Diego to teach kids how to swim by keeping pools open seven days a week all year round. In June, over three-hundred students from the King-Chavez Schools learned to swim over three-weeks at our Y. Belinda, these kids are for you. I can hear you saying, "Don't stop until EVERY child learns to swim!" Read more at http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/yblog/executive-decisions/2011/6/26/well-done-good-and-faithful-servants.html

Emma and Jaime, Paul and Sophie and Celine: Belinda, your daughter, wife and mother will always be an inspiration to us. Her determination to live and battle her cancer, her good sense of humor and optimism showed us what a powerful and determine woman she was. Belinda is now enjoying the beauty of Heaven. You have a beautiful angel taking care of all of you.
