DAVID GRAHAM JESSOP Sr.

DAVID JESSOP Obituary

JESSOP, DAVID GRAHAM, SR. Dr. David Graham Jessop Sr., born on September 6, 1911, the patriarch of the Jessop family, died peacefully of natural causes on December 8, 2010. David's grandparents arrived in San Diego from England in 1890 and eventually pioneered living on Coronado where David was born and graduated from high school. David perfected getting the most out of life in the simplest ways. Those who knew him saw the magic in the way he hunted and fished (catching trout bare handed or marlin from a 14-foot boat), the result of his deep understanding of all things natural. He took canoe trips to the Coronado Islands for a few days of fishing. He found peace, satisfaction and joy in the wonders of nature perhaps as a partial result of a yearlong family trip around the world in 1928. He had a terrific sense of humor, always had endless stories to tell, was the first one up on a camping trip, caught the first fish and was very hard to keep up with. He was still driving and fishing this year. David was president of the student body at San Diego State, also graduated from S.C. as a Dr. of Optometry and served on the State License Board. David was an athletic, quiet, confident, Renaissance man and the catalyst for many conservation and community efforts such as the construction of the Ocean Beach Fishing Pier, the La Jolla Underwater Park and preserving the kelp beds. As an inventor, he help develop a method for mapping the eye for contact lenses. A few of his many other accomplishments include: Member of School Board, Pres. of Rotary Club, Chairman of Ducks Unlimited, Museum of Man Board Member, S.D. County Fish & Game Commission Chairman, Marlin Club President, S.D. County Wildlife Federation President, Bass Fishing Hall of Fame, Sportsman of the Year. He helped introduce wild turkeys, trout, salmon, striped bass, Florida large mouth bass, elk and pheasants into S.D. County. He is survived by his son Dr. David Jessop Jr., his daughter Julie Jessop, son-in-law Dr. Foster Marshall, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. Many other unofficial family members and friends enjoyed his enthusiasm, humor and love. Private services will be held for the immediate family. Please make any donations to Sharp Hospice.

Our condolences to the Jessop family. My husband and I are San Diego natives and have many fond memories of that beautiful clock in downtown San Diego, it was always a pleasure to look at.

Please accept our most sincere condolences from the Dr. Charles H. Smith family, and my Dad Chuck. I know that they were great friends, fellow Rotarians and Optometrists. My Dad has often spoken of their friendship. I spoke with David several times re: my Dad. The last time was a few weeks ago...he didn't have my Dad's address at Sunrise, and wanted to send him a Christmas card. I don't think I ever met him personally, but from our phone conversations I could tell that he was a very pleasant, intelligent persons who really cared for his friends and acquaintences. Please know that our thoughts and prayers will be with you. Thankyou.
Sincerely,
Dr. Charles H. Smith family (Webb Smith...son).
