DENNIS AVERY Obituary

AVERY, DENNIS S. October 23, 1940 to July 23, 2012 Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Dennis Avery always put others needs and wants first. A man who loved his family, travel, athletics and adventure, Dennis often recounted stories of his childhood. His parents, R. Stanton and Dorothy Avery, were very busy growing their label company, Avery Dennison. However, their spontaneous family trips left lasting impressions on Dennis. Throughout his life, he continued to travel the world and even lived in Germany in his 20s. Dennis was a highly educated man. He attended Monrovia Duarte High School where he played varsity basketball. He earned his BA from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his JD from Cal Western School of Law, his LLB from Trinity Hall at Cambridge University, and his MBA from Pepperdine University. He would continue his connections to his schools, making generous donations to Cal Western and Cambridge. His love for adventure led him to learn to fly at the age of 15. For the earlier part of his life, he enjoyed surfing, riding his motorcycle, running half marathons, and building Ham radios. He continued to travel the world in the latter part of his life, but he always remembered to correspond with those he cared about and express gratitude to those who helped him along the way in his life. His professional life was also varied. He worked in West Berlin on the British Railway. He had a contractor and real estate license, working in home building. He was the Chief of the San Diego City Attorney's Consumer Fraud Division. He served as the Dean of Students at Cal Western School of Law in the 1980s. He also served on numerous boards of non-profit organizations, including the Avery Dennison Board of Directors. Everyone who knew him recounts stories of how he loved to perform magic tricks for children and that he had a great sense of humor. No matter who you were, he always made one feel as if you were the most important person to him. His smile and presence would light up a room. He was also generous, donating time and money to causes and organizations locally in San Diego, Borrego, and internationally. He was a great friend to the San Diego Chinese community, volunteering his time to Chinese community events and providing money to many Chinese community organizations. In Borrego, he helped build a skate park and most notably erected the metal animals throughout his land he called Galleta Meadows. Internationally, some of his donations included support for AIDs orphanages in South Africa, a library for a town in Honduras, clean drinking water for villages in South America, and helping send hundreds of wheelchairs for the disabled and training midwives in remote villages in Tibet. Dennis passed away in Sharpe Memorial Hospital from cardiac arrest and multiple organ failure. He was surrounded by his wife, children, and other family and friends. Dennis is survived by his wife, Sally; siblings, Judy and Russell; children, Halina, Christopher, Sara, and Theodore; stepdaughter, Natasha; and two grandchildren, Halina and Kyler. The funeral will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church located in Hillcrest on August 4 at 9 a.m. Donations can be made to Chinese Service Center of San Diego or to the Chinese School of San Diego. Please mail donations to 5075 Ruffin Road, Suite A, San Diego, CA 92123.

Dennis is truly someone who I admired for his humbleness and genuineness. His kindness and generosity is seen everywhere. His smile and kind heart will be greatly missed. He's a great American.

I am an old friend of Dennis' brother, Russell, and I met Dennis but two or three times, some thirty five years ago. I just learned of his death twenty minutes ago, and after reading about his life, my thrity five year old memory of him was confirmed. He struck me as a funny, loving, and gentle man. Our loss is great. Heaven's gain is greater.

Dennis,

Thank you for your friendship. It was more than I deserve. I will remember forever our many hours of meandering talks. It was always refreshing to get a dose of your wisdom and fiercely independent thinking. Sorry, I could not make your funeral today. I am at a family reunion in Tulsa. I thought long and hard and I believe you would have wanted me to be with loved ones in this land where you and I share a commonality.

You are one of my heroes. Thank you for showing me how to live a life worth living. I will miss our conversations, my mentor and friend.

Until our next lunch date.

Dear Sally,

Robin and I were deeply, deeply saddened to learn of Dennis' passing, and our warmest wishes and prayers go out to you and to Dennis' family.

Although we saw each other only infrequently, Dennis and I shared an intense bond for over 65 years. This began with the close partnering between his family (via his mom and his dad), and my family (via my dad), to build the incredible enterprise that is now Avery Dennison Corporation. What a great ride this was, from almost nothing to what we see today, and I think Dennis and I always shared a certain awe for our Dads' great business and philanthropic achievements. In fact, whenever we have seen each other (and also in occasional letters), Dennis has made a point of emphasizing how incredibly important my Dad was in his life – in fact, he was one of Dennis' great mentors. He and I share this honor.

My ongoing memory of Dennis will be marked by his inspiring curiosity about so many things that the rest of us might otherwise miss, and by his generosity and immensely large heart. Dennis always had an empathetic and unusually insightful observation about everyone and everything that he encountered. In this way, his life was full of many great achievements.

Losing a spouse is certainly one of the most difficult of life's passages, and we will be thinking of you often as you pass through these stressful times. Dennis was an elegant and caring man, struck down much too young. But he is now blessed with eternal peace, and we are now blessed with our memories of him.

Warmest wishes,

August 3, 2012

The effects of Dennis' kindness has trickled down to us. I've been influenced by my late father Frank and my uncles David and Danny Du to help others in the community. I've come to find out that David is a great friend of Sally and Dennis. Dennis' influence on my uncle trickled down to me and my students. That's a fantastic example of Dennis' long reaching web of influence. I am thankful I at least got to say hi to him a couple of times.

Kindest regards,
Thuan (Frank) Du

Dennis always had a little smile on him that made us think of him as a little boy. No wonder he always played Santa when we had our annual Christmas party.
He delighted in giving.

We will all miss Dennis; he and Sally touch so many of our lives.

We remember not long ago, our almost 8 hours carpooling from San Diego to North Hollywood to attend a New Year Celebration due to LA traffic. On the way, we discussed various charitable activities needed for our communities. Dennis and Sally accomplish a lot of them since then. We too actively involve in the American Chinese Education and Culture Foundation.

We always remember Dennis million-dollars smiles, friendly & warm handshakes.

Sally, our love and support will always be here for you.

I have known Dennis for over sixty years as a childhood friend, athlete, magician, and astonishing worker to learn new skills. The piano being one but hundreds of others. Above all selfless, loving of his collective children, and his wife's family. Lest I forget humanity. Too much to lose so early to not have him around to laugh with. A great gift for mankind.
