Aunt Sue passed away late last month and as I was looking for old photos, I found several of you from my wedding and it made me smile and tear up. You're missed by everyone...I can't believe it's been 16 years already. I'm somewhat comforted, and I'm sure your dad is too, knowing that you were waiting for Auntie on the other side. We love and miss you Eric...

Last week we observed the 10th year of Eric's passing. In honor of Eric we followed our tradition for the day of having a meal at The Hamburger Factor, hanging out at the cemetery and "talking" to Eric, refreshing the flowers at his roadside memorial and decorating the house for Halloween (his favorite holiday). Additionally, we brought home a puppy for Eric's little brother, Dan, as you all know Eric loves animals. The puppy was named "Sophie."
This year we are moving Eric's Traditional "Potluck" Turkey Dinner to November 8th - 2 days before his actual birthday. This will be a Sunday and will make it easier for everyone to attend. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, November 8th. We look forward to seeing everyone, eating turkey and toasting Eric as we do each year. Love you all.

Hi Eric (and everyone else),
As the time rolls around to that bad time of the year again I want to remind your family and friends that when they visit the cemetery to be careful of the flower pot. The reason is - there are 7 little frogs living in the flower pot. So, if anyone wants to water the flowers, please do so by bringing a pitcher to water with... Do not remove the flowers from the flower pot or you will crush the growing family of frogs that Eric has attracted.
I know how much you love animals Eric, so in a way this is a tribute to you.

Your farm is looking great. I think you would approve of the old horses we have taken on as "projects." They needed homes and some place to retire other than the glue factory.

Hello Son,
It is about to move into another year - without you here. 2010 will simply mark more time since your departure. We did follow all of the holiday traditions you enjoy and insist upon. Nothing changes in that respect; except of course we follow the traditions without your physical presence. You have "real" flowers at the cemetery. We had a "real" Christmas tree. We had the obligatory Pillsbury crescent rolls and Pepsi.
"Real" pumpkins, too. I'm sure you know this already.

Great news! The most amazing thing happened on Saturday, Feb. 29th. Eric's wedding ring was found!
Eric thought he had lost his wedding ring around the pool yard - after he and I had spent a day trenching and dumping dirt. That was in January of 2005. Well, the ring was never found even after a concerted effort involving metal detectors, dirt sifting and excavating of the first 5 inches of soil in the pool yard. It never turned up.
Then the pool yard was landscaped and upgraded last summer. We thought it might show up then. Nothing.
Last Saturday, Terry was planting berry bushes down by Eric's trucks - no where near the pool yard. About a foot and a half down, Terry found the wedding ring. What a surprise! 14 kt white gold - very dirty, but it is Eric's ring!

Eric, I found this email you had sent to me right after we brought home our new duck Jesse. It is so funny. I wanted to share it with everyone. Enjoy.
Mother,
Well things seemed to start off great this morning. I was able to clip her wings without any struggle at all, she really is the sweetest duck I’ve ever seen. That’s about the last good thing that happened. Once I set her by herself to see how everyone interacted Angel came up to her and tried her usual bossy self, but before she had a chance to peck her on the head my foot sent her flying. Fluffy wants to mate with her. Emily tried to go after her, but I was just about to beat Emily to the ground with that 2X4 that mom left out there when I caught my temper. Then I noticed that Emily is going after ALL the chickens. Well the duck can’t move as fast as the chickens so I put her in that Dog (not cat) carrier, and put some water and weeds in there for her. FYI MOM if you are getting low on animal food TELL ME!! It’s kinda hard to separate and regulate when there is no food to distract anyone. Sorry that part was a little frustrating this morning. So I guess we are going to have to come up with a alternative plan for our new duck. I’m thinking a separate cage might have to be the way to go. One right next to the existing one if you wanted. Anyways let me know what your thoughts are on this subject. Your, son.

Dear Grandson Eric
Today it is 2 years since you left us. I love you and miss you very much and I talk to you every single day about a lot of things. Here is the latest thing that happened to convince me that you do hear me.
About 4 months ago, the computer you built up for Grandma got a virus from the internet which completely destroyed the hard drive. The computer was jammed and nothing could be done with it. I tried to delete and reload Windows at least 4 times but the computer was still jammed. I removed the hard drive and tried to install 3 different hard drives but none of them would install. Then I bought 2 new hard drives and they would not install because they were too advanced for the computer. I was ready to smash the old HD 4 months later but decided to try 1 more time.
I looked at the computer and said "Eric I need your help with this thing". I put the HD back into the computer and loaded Windows, as before, and low and behold the thing worked just fine and works as perfectly as the day you installed it. Now tell me how the hard drive fixed itself without your help.
Thanks Eric.
Love you very very much, Grandpa.

When I Think of Eric
When I think of Eric, I think of a hard worker. He always has his priorities straight, and I admire him for that. I wish I could say the same about myself.
When I think of Eric, I think of all the times my friends and I shared. I think back, and know it wouldn’t have been the same without our friend Eric in our lives.
When I think of Eric, I think of Java Hut. To Eric and everybody else, this was our shelter, our home our support system, our palace, our best childhood memories and the place we grew up together at. Java Hut was something very special to Eric, and our friends. It’s something that I will never forget about, it’s the best memories I have.
When I think of Eric, I think of a friend. Someone that never judged me, or took me for granted. He always made me and everyone else around him feel welcome. He was a great friend, one of the best I had. I couldn’t say I had a best friend in our Java crew because we were all best friends. We would do anything for each other, just like Eric would want. We are more than friends, we are family. Eric had the best group of friends possible, I know for sure. The Java Hut crew will go down in history as the best circle of friends, family, brothers, and sisters ever. We are all better together.
When I think of Eric, I think of someone who was tragically taken out of our lives. I think of someone who can never be replaced. I think of someone who will never be forgotten.

When I think of Eric
When I think of Eric, I think of him working in his truck...
When I think of Eric, I think of his hilarious sarcasm and his witty quick mind. He always had something to say, so don’t even try to come back with something because you’ll fail miserably.
When I think of Eric, I think of his stoic disposition. Nothing was that crazy to Eric, he could handle anything imaginable.
When I think of Eric, I think of someone that always had an answer for me. No matter what it was, how serious, or how freaked out I was, he always had an answer and made it better. The same goes for the rest of the Java Hut Crew, I know for sure.

When I think of Eric, I think of his million dollar smile. I never in my life have seen someone with a bigger, more intoxicating smile. I always loved to make Eric laugh so I could see his pearly whites just one more time.
When I think of Eric, his laugh fills my ears with joy. His hilarious chuckle was so fast and full of life. I don’t need to hear it again to remember it; it’s burnt into my memory.
When I think of Eric, I think of bands like Poison, Rush, Metallica, and Led Zeppelin. To Eric every rose has its thorns. I treasure the countless nights Eric and all the boys just listened to music and hung out.
When I think of Eric, I think of his almost too tight jeans, his hiking boots, and his black corduroy jacket. He had a style all his own and I loved it, only he could pull it off.

Hi Son,
Well the infamous "Game Time" place has burned to the ground this morning. I assume this is a sign; the close to an era of "bad" time. I don't know. Anyway, Manu and I saw what was left of the place on our way to work this morning.

Eric,
Okay, I have a picture of you up near my desk now. It is one of your wedding pictures taken with you, David and me.
I was driving during lunch today, and I passed by Subway. I couldn't keep the tears in. It's hard to think about how much life sucks (<-- for lack of a better word). The world doesn't seem right. There is a huge part missing, and everyone that you have left behind has to learn to deal with it, because there is nothing that we can do.
And I think that is what kills us the most. There is Nothing we can do about it. It just is. It is a crappy existance without having you beside us everyday.
I miss you will all my heart.
I will always love you.
Love,
Jacqui

Good morning Eric.
I am back here at D3 again and thinking about you. The first thing Rinna said to me when she saw my desk is "where are the pictures of Eric?" I told her I would bring some once I got settled in. It is just not the same being here with out you. It's hard not to think of you and how things were when you were around. Things were easier when you were around.
I love you Eric. You're always in my thoughts!

Morning son,
Well...it has been a while. We've been busy working on the "place." We had a lovely trip to the Ramona Dump on Saturday - courtesy of your father-in-law. Your brother is driving the "purple" truck all around. It always looks like you're home when I see it parked in the front. Your boys, Spike and Ike, are healthy and happy. Cute boys. I have not done the gardening yet - as I promised. I am a bit behind in that area. I will get something in the ground soon. Love, Mom

Hello again son,
I am on a new quest to keep real, fresh flowers at your grave... Sounds a bit sad, but it does make me visit you more often. I've gotten use to "swinging by" your new neighborhood on my way to work or back from work. Also, I stop by if I'm going by for whatever reason on the weekend. It is a cheerful place - in existence for such a sad reason... When I sit by you I can hear everything going on in Poway. You like stuff like that. I can hear the games at Twin Peaks Middle School, I can hear the horse activities at PVRA, I can hear the burro across the street, I can hear the bells from St. Gabriel's, I can see Twin Peaks mountain, and I can hear the train from the Old Poway Park - you know how you liked hearing that train on the weekend mornings (no!). It is an active neighborhood. It is the heart of our old town. I guess eventually we will all be part of Poway literally and figuratively. I'll see you soon. Love, Mom.

Hey Eric,
Didn't come to say anything in particular, but wanted to let you know I am thinking of you always... We miss you so much and we always will. It's still all so unbelievable to me that you aren't here with us anymore. The wedding is in 6 months now... you will be there in spirit, but how we wish you could be there standing next to us. I think you would approve:)
Love you, miss you

Eric,
Guess what?!? You won. We got your desk. You know, THE DESK! I should be taking it home next week. Sue didn't want to let "Eric's desk" go to the dump, so she held onto it until she found it a good home. I love you big brother! Watch out for us. We are always thinking of you!

Hello son,
We found a great home for the big, blue Power Wagon; the kid above our house, Blake. He and the truck make the perfect pair. Blake was quite enthused to see the metal grid side panels and the lively bumper stickers! He and a few friends pumped up the tires and towed it up the hill with their jeep. The Power Wagon actually looked pretty nice once it had air in the tires. I can see why you wanted it. Anyway, at least we know who has the truck and we can follow its progress - morphing into an awesome off-road vehicle.
Next, we will work on assembling the monster truck. That may involve Danny and a paint job. I haven't told Danny the good news, yet!
Love, Mom.

Hi Eric,
I miss you! So I wanted to let you know, I got myself a new, cute, pink ipod! And what are some of the first songs I download, Metallica of course! Each and everyone reminds me of you. Listening to them in Java Hut, out in the desert, driving in the truck. Metallica - your favorite!
I love you and miss you,
Kelli

Eric,
I miss you! It's hard sitting here at D3 and not having you to call when I need help. I miss coming into the "fish bowl" every break and lunch I get, and hanging out with you. I wish that I could still get your lunch everyday like I used to.
I still get that weird feeling that you are watching every thing that I do on the computer. I keep waiting for you to start typing on my screen, just to mess with me :)
You are always in my thoughts! Look over us for the New Year, and I can't wait until I am graced with your presence again some day. ****I love you big brother****

Dear son,
On Christmas Eve we went to the cemetery and "planted" the acorns from your oak tree. It will be our little game to see how far they grow before the maintenance crew mows them down! They are planted around your stone and around your name. It is up to you to help them sprout.
Jacqui found a new picture of you at work (your work). I have it as my desktop wallpaper. You appear to be quite annoyed in the picture. It is a classic "Eric" shot. You are also making a gesture at the camera that I cannot display at work (totally inappropriate), so I covered that part with my desktop icons. Very clever.
Look after us in this new year.
Love, Mom.

Dear son,
Well, we have made some progress on the yard. The "rogue" oak tree that is in danger of falling on your roof is slowly being removed. Carlos is the tree trimmer. I know you really liked the way it arched over the walkway, but I believe if you had noticed the way the roots were tearing up the walkway and moving on toward tearing up the foundation of your house - you would probably come to the same conclusion, too. The little tree must go!
Your little boy dogs have made the transition from bad boys to lovely pets. No nuticles involved. They don't seem to mind nor notice the difference.
I know you watch us and look over us. Thank you. Love, Mom.

Good morning Son,
Well we do have one respectable pumpkin from all of those plants. Hopefully the gophers will leave it alone and it can sit in the sun - turning a lovely orange. I've had some very strange dreams about you lately. It seems that I "see" you wherever I go...
We are continuing on our quest to make the homestead as wonderful as possible; remaining within our (yours and ours) original vision. Of course, this is taking a little longer without your physical assistance; however, you are assisting in spirit. You are the reason I do many of the things that I do.
We are looking after each other. We are keeping the family strong - as you would want. Love, Mom.

Dear Eric,
Today when I woke up I found out it is exactly a year ago
that you left. It still must be so hard on your family and friends.
You have been on my mind a lot this year.
It still seems so unreal that u are gone.
Your in my heart and I will never be able to forget u, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Regards, Claudia

Dear son,
We went with the pumpkin project. I cheated and bought 2 pony packs of Big Max pumpkins. They have survived the switch from container to ground and are "gorgeous." They are the best looking pumpkin plants this property has ever seen. I also, soaked and sprouted the last set of seeds you had washed and saved from one of our Bate's Nut Farm pumpkins. They are in the ground and growing, too. Most importantly, I soaked and sprouted the packet of Atlantic Giant seeds you had sent away for... They were a little old and many were broken, but I have managed to sprout 4 pretty good looking plants. They too are in the ground. Cross your fingers. Chase away the gophers please. We'll see what happens over the next month. We should have some baby pumpkins by Labor Day Weekend. Hopefully, some large ones by the beginning of October. More updates to come. Love, Mom.

Eric,
I cannot believe it has been almost 11 months. The time goes by too fast, and it still seems so surreal. I don't think I have fully accepted it yet, but I hope to someday be able to look at your pictures without feeling like it is all some cruel joke. You were taken way too soon. We miss you so much. Love you always

Dear Son,
The time has come to ask the question: To plant pumpkins or not to plant pumpkins. That is the question. July 4th is the official pumpkin planting day according to Bates Nut Farm, but we can do it anytime this week. We do have an area that could be fortified to deflect incoming gophers, squirrels and rabbits bent on destruction. I recall that the squirrels finally "did in" your pumpkin vine. It would be a challenge to see how far we could get the vines. I will consult with your siblings and see what they think. Love, Mom

It is hard to believe that it has been 4 years since we met on Browns front yard on the 4th of July. 4 years since we went to dinner with Carlos, Candy and Tiffany at Buca de Beppos and you we so nervous sitting next to me you drank dinner, and then threw it up. It only took you dying for Carlos to finally admit that he staged everyone ditching us and not coming back to my parents house to go into the hot tub. I don't know how many times I asked you about having to go to work the next morning before you finally left at 3. Still leaving without my phone number, which later had to be coerced out of Carlos, and then still you waiting a week and a half to use it. I miss our long conversations that we use to have, the phone company loved us with our $200 phone bills.
It is hard to imagine that we spent our whole lives in the same town, going to the same schools, and graduating the same year from H.S., and our lives had yet to cross. How many near misses that we knew about, where I heard about "I just saw my friend Eric". I always believed that we were destined to met at this time in our lives where we were both ready for the love that we shared and there was nothing holding ourselves back.
I miss you, I am getting closer to finally moving into the bedroom. To think a year ago all I wanted was for us to move in, now I don't want to be there without you. I love you with all my heart and are never far from my thoughts.
love you always

You were right Eric I AM William Wallace
You scored as William Wallace. The great Scottish warrior William Wallace led his people against their English oppressors in a campaign that won independence for Scotland and immortalized him in the hearts of his countrymen. With his warrior's heart, tactician's mind, and poet's soul, Wallace was a brilliant leader. He just wanted to live a simple life on his farm, but he gave it up to help his country in its time of need.

Dear Eric,
We never had the chance to meet you in person, however, we feel we do, having learned so many loving things from your wonderful grandparents, Frank & Joy Palfy.
On our recent visit with them in April, your loving grandparents told us of your lust for life, & on-going quest to accomplish the myraid list of goals you set for yourself; traits, which are so admirable in someone so young.
We grieve with your loving family that you were not able to acheive all of your earthly pursuits & dreams, but know that the many happy memories of your youth will help to fill the enormous void that is felt by all who knew & loved you so dearly.
Having grown up with your grandfather Frank,- & known your great-paternal grandparents as well, it is easy to understand how you inherited your rich pedigree of ambition & skills.
May God bless you & keep you.

Good morning son,
Your front yard - the oak tree area - is now weed-free. Brieanne voted for very, very low maintenance landscape. She said she had a black thumb, so we have opted to landscape with rocks and dirt. It's gorgeous. I found several baby snakes and safely relocated them to other areas of the yard. While cleaning the rocks I found many toads, too. Lastly, the lizard playground under this oak tree is alive and well. They kept me company during the 2 full days it took to pull those weeds.
I believe you would be happy with the results. We kept the oak branches that you had leaned against the rock in place. In honor of your artistic-landscaping touch.
Love, Mom.

Dear son,
Your manzanita grove is half planted. You wanted the same manzanita that grows in the hills. I found that variety; and I found 6 others. I bought those too. I knew you'd approve.
If you could have a talk with the local gophers that would help immensely. Love, Mom.
