Frank Greco Obituary

Frank Louis Greco San Diego Frank Louis Greco passed away peacefully on November 11, 2021. Frank was born on October 1, 1920 in Los Angeles to Italian immigrants, Luigi and Rosa Greco. Frank went to college in Los Angeles and was subsequently drafted into the Navy where he served in the Pacific during World War II on the USS Haynsworth. Frank was a man of vision, a doer, and the epitome of the American Dream. He and his family came to San Diego in the late 1940's where they opened San Diego Importing and Leonardo's Cafe Italia in the heart of Little Italy. At one time, there were three Leonardo's in San Diego. Frank met the love of his life, Katherine Giacalone Greco, in 1949 and they later married on April 16, 1950. Frank and Katherine loved to travel. During their travels to Sicily, they connected with family in Poggioreale, opening the door to family relationships there. Frank was a generous man with a heart of gold. Always willing to give a helping hand, Frank was known to stop by "a la passata" (on the way) to visit a sick friend or help someone in need. Frank is survived by his wife of 71 years, Katherine Greco, sisters in law, Toni Monise and Carmella Giacalone, children, Christine Funtas (Michael), Louis Greco (Vicki), and Susan Neubert (Rod), 7 grandchildren, James Funtas, Stephanie Olds, Gregory Greco, Julia Greco, Holly Warrick, David Harmon, Heidi Knowles, ten great grandchildren, and ten nieces and nephews. Another one of his favorite sayings was, "a piu tarde!" (see you later!) He will always be in our hearts.

Frank was awesome, I worked on his sons house next to the Resturaunt. Frank would would ask my partner and I what we wanted for lunch every day and then go make it at the Resturaunt and bring it to us. Boy could he cook!

My father made lunch at the India Street Leonardo´s a daily routine for many, many years. I can recall our family going to dinner there as early as the first grade where I used to stare in wonder at the huge boxes of pasta piled high against the glass window separating the restaurant booth from the market, and at the giant kegs of Pabst beer! Always the best pizza in town with the cheese cooked to a perfect brown. What a wonderful long life well-lived.

Dear Katherine, Christine, Louis & Susan, I saw your father´s obituary in the Sunday paper and wanted to offer my condolences, and also my thoughts on what a good Man Frank truly was. I bought the lot behind Hawk Street with only his word and a handshake. And, he guaranteed me that would be enough, he didn´t need a deposit he lived by his promises. I only have fond memories of going to Leonardo´s, and will always remember that he truly indeed had a heart of gold. "A pui tarde"
In a better place. Love, jojo
