JAMES CHIPPS Obituary

CHIPPS, JAMES LEWIS War Hero Teacher Healer March 22, 1920 to Dec. 8, 2009 Lust for learning and leadership, love for others and life, and inspiration for fun for those who enjoyed his company characterized Jim's life. He left us abruptly in the wind of the night. James Lewis Chipps was raised with his two younger brothers Frank and Grant in Yamhill, Oregon. When James was age 7, two events occurred to shape his life: The death of his father, and the beginning of the Great Depression. His mother Sylva never remarried and so he was raised by a single mother in an age when that was far from the norm. He was able primarily through hard work and rewards for academic achievement to graduate from Pacific University in Forest Grove Oregon with a bachelors' degree in English. James voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was elevated to the rank of Second Lieutenant. He was sent to the campaign in Burma where he served in a forward field hospital in support of U.S. and Chinese infantry. He was awarded the Bronze Star twice for his service. He taught high school in Fossil, Oregon after discharge, where he taught English and coached the baseball team. There he met his bride to be, Mary Rose Fanger. They lived together until Mary's death last year. They have three children Preston, Gregory, and Geoffery. James entered the University of Washington graduate school in the relatively new discipline of psychology. He earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and accepted a position with the Veteran's Administration in San Diego in 1954. He worked in private practice and taught, completing a career of 55 years as a therapist and educator. He helped to establish the San Diego campus of the California School of Professional Psychology (Alliant University) where he is Professor Emeritus. Dr. Chipps is survived by his three children and his grandchildren, Nathan and Matthew of Seattle, and Sarah of San Francisco; and his brother Grant Chipps of Vancouver. Services are tentatively planned for Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on January 15, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. To confirm, email Preston Chipps at: pchipps1@ san.rr.com.

Dr. Chips was my professor and Chair. I was 50 when I graduated. I am 76 and feel grateful for his mentoring. I am continuing to work as a Clinical psychologist and as Dr. Chips did, I will work until I no longer can. He was a blessing in my life. Blessings always to his family. I am now 76. I hope this can get to his family. July 2023.

What an amazing and good person - legendary at CSPP and SDPA. I met him in the late '90s at CSPP as one student among many. I remember his public, outspoken reaction to the name change to "Alliant" -- he called it "Ollie Ant University." A few months ago, I saw him for the last time walking near UCSD, and said hello. We chatted briefly and he mentioned that he was almost 90. Then he walked off, proudly.

Jim Chipps was a mentor and a friend to me and many others at CSPP. He was a clinician's clinician, and loved and respected as a teacher. He will always be remembered as a founding father of the school, and as a wise and dear man.

I'm greatly saddened to have belatedly learned of the untimely death of Jim Chipps. I say "untimely" for, despite his advanced years, Jim was a man for the ages. He was a giant of a man in both his presence and his spirit. He was a revered and pioneering figure in the San Diego psychological community, and was one of the original founders and leaders of CSPP. Decade after decade he served the school and had a profound influence on the personal and professional development of countless graduate students.

My deepest sympathy goes out to his family. We want you to know that in a real sense we are all privileged to be part of his extended family.

Preston, Greg and Geoff,

Your father was a generous man, larger than life. Compassionate and tolerant to his family, his clients and to this once 16 year old, whom he took in. I miss him too. My condolences to you all.

Goodbye Jim. You are deep in the ages, now, deep in the ages but your spirit and laughter will continue to animate those of us who worked along side of you for so many years.
