Jane Colburn

1929 - 2016

Jane Colburn February 20, 1929 - September 3, 2016 San Diego Jane Colburn passed away Saturday September 3, 2016. She was 87. Born Dora Jane Rasmussen on February 20, 1929, to Charles Oscar and Mary Elizabeth Rasmussen, in Burlington, KS, she went by her middle name. After graduation from High School, Jane proceeded to Saint Luke's for nurses training, followed by duty in the US Navy (Nurses Corps) in April, 1951. It was at Balboa where she met a young doctor, James Edward Colburn. The two began a relationship and married on July 26, 1957. Jane left the Navy in November, 1957. Two sons were born: Mike, in 1958, and Bill, in 1961. The family moved to Oceanside and Cherry Hill, NJ, as Jim pursued his Navy career. The family relocated back to Pacific Beach, as an opening at Balboa occurred. Jim retired from the Navy in 1977 as a Captain, then began a career with Kaiser, retiring in 1990. In the 1980's both sons graduated with engineering degrees; Mike joined SDG&E, and Bill, Hewlett-Packard. Jim and Jane took this opportunity to travel. Jim continued his 1936 Cadillac project. In the late 90's, Jim was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Jim passed in August, 2000, at 69 years. Life as a widow continued in the PB home. She enjoyed time with extended family, but later sold the home and move to the Wesley Palms retirement home, in 2006. A decision she never regretted, she made many new friends. Jane valued health; a month before her passing, had no significant or unusual medical issues. Frugal, she looked for the true value in things before deciding to actually buy. Jim and Jane placed a value on education, leading their sons to pursuing successful engineering careers. Jane was predeceased by her parents, her sister, and her husband. She is survived by her sons, Mike (Marissa), Bill (Julie), grandchildren George (Stephanie) of Oakland, Joni (Anna) of Pacific Palisades, and Kevin, of Bay Park. A Celebration of Life for Jane is scheduled for 10:30 am Saturday, October 22, at Wesley Palms Woodbury Hall, in San Diego.
