Robert Van Dusen Obituary

Robert (Bob) Van Dusen passed away at his home in San Diego at the age of 93. Bob was born in Pt Loma in 1929, and grew up in Lemon Grove, attending Grossmont High School class of 1947. Bob graduated from Loma Linda University (1951) with a degree in Physical Therapy (PT). He joined the military, first with the Naval Reserves then the Army in 1955. On return from the service, Bob took a position with San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) as an elementary school teacher. Completing his MA at SDSU (1964), he then worked as a school counselor at several SDUSD schools. After retiring from SDUSD, Bob took a PT position with Kaiser Home Health, from which he retired after ten years. Culminating his active career, Bob spent the last 11 years as a volunteer with the Loma Portal Elementary School reading program. Bob's hobbies included traveling in his motor home, square dancing, and early San Diego aviation history - an interest from his parents as pioneers in early San Diego aviation.

Survived by his children Deborah (Bob), Sharon, and David (Marilyn); grandchildren Eric, Ian, and Davina; several nephews and nieces; twin brother Richard, of North Carolina; his longtime partner Audrey Miller and her family; and his first wife, mother of his children, Barbara Rosner.

Bob will be laid to rest at Ft Rosecrans with honors, alongside his second wife Lois Devine, and near his parents, William Lafayette Van Dusen and Helen Hubbell Van Dusen, only a couple miles from where he was born. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Loma Portal Elementary School Foundation, "In Memory of Robert Van Dusen and his dedication to teaching young readers."

I was trying to remember who my 4th grade teacher was at Rolando Park. I remembered most of my teachers but third and fourth ('62-'64) grade was spotty in my recollection. It appears that Mr Van Dusen was 4th Grade, yet I remember a woman teacher asking the class to join together in silent prayer the morning we found out JFK was assassinated. I suppose it's possible a woman substitute was present that week. Anyhow, I remember Mr Van Dusen as being a kind and soft spoken man. I am happy to know he made it to a ripe old age enjoying his kids, grandkids, travel, and hobbies. Hope to see him again on that distant shore in the sweet bye and bye.

Mr. Van Dusen was my 4th grade teacher at Rolando Park Elementary for the 1961-1962 school year. I remember being nervous about being assigned to a male teacher for the first time, but Mr. Van Dusen was so kind and soft spoken in addition to being a very good teacher. Fond memories and I'm glad he had a long, full, life.
