Jacob Goss Obituary

Jacob Goss, 93, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009. He was born to Lunda and Jacob Goss of Mansfield, Mo., in February 1916, the youngest of five kids.

As a young boy, Jacob would walk many, many miles to attend church. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Jacob was a World War II veteran and served for four and a half years in the Pacific Theatre. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and also received the Purple Heart in the Battle of Mindanao.

After his honorable discharge in 1945, he went to work for Honeycutt Chevrolet in Mansfield, where he received his diploma as a body and fender mechanic in 1947.

In 1951, Jacob moved to Arroyo Grande, where he owned and operated Goss Body Shop for 49 years. He then moved the business to his home, where he worked for another nine years.

After he retired, he took up woodworking and gardening. He loved working with his hands and making something out of nothing. He also enjoyed hunting with his friends and took his sons on several hunting trips to Colorado.

Jacob dearly loved car racing. He owned Sprint Cars with his two sons and would NEVER miss a race. From Santa Maria to Hanford to Baylands - whenever his boys were racing, "Pop" was there.

Jacob wasn't one who liked to travel, but every summer when school was out he took his family to Missouri on vacation to be with family and friends. It was a fun trip taking old "Route 66," and stopping at all of the Indian gift shops - memories his kids will always cherish.

We will cherish the wonderful memories he created for his family and friends. He will be remembered as an honest man who loved work, family and friends. He was known around Arroyo Grande for his old black truck and white coveralls. He will be missed by all.

Jake is survived by the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Nicie; daughters Normetta (Bill) Gularte of Arroyo Grande, Connie (John) Souza of Nipomo, Sandy (Jack) English of Arroyo Grande and Barbara Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla.; sons Jay (Kim) Goss of Nipomo, Jerry (Natalie) Goss of Arroyo Grande and Charles Goss of Missouri; sister, Norma (Eddie) Chambers of Oklahoma City; several grandkids and great-grandkids; and a lot of nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel, 1239 Longbranch in Grover Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Jacob's memory to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast, 277 South St. Ste. R, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, or American Cancer Society, 1428 Phillips Lane, Ste. 201, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.

Jake Goss: My father-in-law was the most honest and gentle of a man.He deeply loved his wife and children and would allways take time to reflect on how it was in the past and share those memories with me.Jake would tell me you must forgive differances you have with people as he was a very forgiving man.His family and friends are so fortunate to have known such a man.I told Jake how much I loved him and he replied ,I love you to. You were like a father to me you are missed so much! old soldiers never die they just fade away.

My Dearest Friend Sandy & Famlies,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad! I know it isn't easy to let go as you know I had to let go of my Mom. I think of her everyday. I know you were close with your Dad also. We have to know they are at peace now and we will see them again someday. My thoughts are with you and your family at such a down time. If you ever need to talk to me just call. Im sorry we were unable to come to the services as we had out of town visitors up for dinner, or I would have been there for you. Please except my apology for not being able to be there.
Love,
Tina & Gary Power
