Robert Johnson Obituary

Bob Johnson, 87, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2012. Despite his illness, he still maintained his fine sense of humor. When asked if he needed anything, he would reply "girls" or "chocolate." His humor and quick wit will be missed, as will his warm fatherly hugs. Bob was the first child of Burton and Birdie Johnson, born in Portland, Ore., in 1924. He grew up in Portland with his sisters, Louise and Helen. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 and proudly served his country. He flew 21 missions as a B-29 pilot in the Pacific Theatre. During the Korean War, he returned to active duty as a troop carrier pilot and flew C-46s and C-119s (flying boxcars) for 18 months. He retired from the Air Force reserves at the rank of Major in 1968. In 1947, he married Betty Erben. In 1955, they moved to San Luis Obispo to start the Hysen-Johnson Ford Dealership and raise their family. Bob and Carl Hysen had a long and congenial partnership and many of their employees also became lifelong friends. Bob served on the planning commission and was active in Kiwanis, Elks, SLO Country Club, San Luis Flying Club, Cal Poly Mustang Boosters, St. Stevens Episcopal Church, American Legion and numerous other organizations. He had an unwavering determination to have all things done right and for the good of the community, but without fame or glory for himself. He always served behind the scenes and kept a low profile. Bob is survived by his sister, Helen Warberg of Portland; daughters Marta Johnson (Robert) of Idaho and Lisa (Jack) Stevens of Santa Barbara; in-laws Patricia Bryant (Erben) of Portland, John and Tara Erben of Richland, Wash., and Marvene Lavato of Kenniwick, Wash.; and nieces and nephews Will, Jim, Ann, Barbara, David, Andy, Jeff, Jill, Justin and Arial. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Betty; and sister, Louise. At his request, no service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011; or Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care, 222 East Canon Perdido St., Santa Barbara, CA 93101.

Bob and I served in the San Luis AF Reserve Squadron together for several years until each of us retired. He was a gentleman in the true sense of its meaning and a wonderful acquaintance. He contributed to his community in many ways and helped to make us what we are.

Lisa and Jack,
It was with great sadness when we heard of your Dad's passing. We knew him such a short time when he lived at Abundant Care, he made such an impression. A true gentle man with so much humor and wit. You were lucky to have Bob as your father. We were lucky to have known him, and you, as we traveled the final road of our parents lives.
