Ann Soldo Obituary

Ann Soldo, the first woman to serve as the city's mayor, died Monday at home. She was 90.

Soldo, who was born and raised in Pajaro, worked in Pajaro Valley schools as a teacher and administrator for more than 30 years before winning election to the City Council in 1979. She was elected mayor in 1983, one of the last to win the job under the old system of at-large elections.

She was active in many community groups, including the Soroptimists, Watsonville Women's Club, the Salvation Army and the Senior Council of Santa Cruz County.

The daughter of an immigrant from Croatia, Soldo and husband Andrew, who died before her, hosted a Croatian music and news program on a local AM radio station for many years.

Pajaro Valley Unified School District recognized her service as an educator and a political leader in 1999, when a new elementary school on East Lake Avenue was named in her honor.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, a nephew and numerous nieces.
Services will be Feb. 4.

Thank You Mrs. Soldo,
I was a scared child and new to McQuiddy School. You always took the time to greet me each morning and always asked how my mother was doing.
Knowing our mother was ill you always offered a kind word and lessend the fears. Thanks again. With Love and Respect.
One of Mary Chavez' children.

Mrs. Soldo was a friend of my Father's & my Principal at MacQuiddy School. She did so many wonderful things for our community. She really made a difference. Huge loss for Watsonville.

Ann was a gentle lion--ferocious for just causes, always concerned about the well-being of those she served. I marvel at how she made you feel listened to...she displayed a keen interest in you when you spoke with her.

No small task, that. Quite a grand lady.

As part of the Rugh family who first moved to Watsonville in 1954, I know Ann Soldo was always a presence and an inspiration in so many ways. Her stepson, Bob, was my first friend in Watsonville. And now my great-grandson attends the school named after her. On behalf of all my family I would like to add to the many tributes honoring this most excellent human being.

Ann~
You taught my family members at Pajaro Elementary School back in the 1940's & 1950's. And you were my Principal at Aptos Jr. High School in the 1970's. Over the years, we'd meet up at various locations throughout Watsonville and you would recognize me by name. I was honored that you did. I will miss you immensely! You are always in my heart.
