Services will be held on Sunday in Santa Cruz for Daniel Garr who passed away on January 11, 2011 following a lengthy illness due to complications he suffered in a boating accident. Born in New York, he was 67 years old.
Professor Garr taught in the Urban Planning Department for San Jose State University and his career in education spanned over 30 years. A graduate of Cornell University, he did research in Indonesia and Amsterdam and has resided in the Santa Cruz area for the past 30 years. He loved animals, in particular puppies and cats. He grew beautiful long stem roses at his home. A classical music aficionado, Professor Garr was often heard as D.J of KUSP radio; later recording an album of his own.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Ponza of Santa Cruz, his sister, Vivian Horowitz of San Diego, and a host of colleagues throughout the world that he enjoyed working and researching with.
Friends and family will gather to celebrate his life on Sunday, January 16, 2010 at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel in Santa Cruz, beginning at 3 p.m.

We will miss hearing his voice and ideas, his vision, on Tuesday nights. I know we are many, these Tuesday listeners, and we are everywhere; now with a gap to fill with thanks for Dan Garr.

Dear Garr family,
Dan was my neighbor beginning about 1972 on Brown Gables Rd. I remember him as a helpful and fun person, loving animals and music with such passion! It is with great sadness that I think of him gone in such a tragic way; he was such a peaceful person. After moving away from Ben Lomond I was out of touch with Dan, but have never forgotten him--and never will. I am so sorry for your loss. Barbara (Villa) Rowland

Dan was a colleague of mine at San Jose State and we became closer after the 1989 earthquake, when we would ride the Highway 17 bus together from Santa Cruz to SJSU. I still picture him with his huge old-fashioned, leather brief case as he hurriedly walked across campus on his bandy legs.
Since the accident I would stop by and visit and talk about life, the world, how things had changed in his lifetime. Our conversations were warm and his intelligence always fascinated me.
I hadn't seen Dan in a few weeks or more, and today after breakfast I was with two friends and we walked by his house, looked at the amazing garden, and said goodbye to a friend. Dan, may you truly rest peacefully forever.

I was a student of Dan's at San Jose State in the mid-70's and also a friend. I had lost touch with Dan over the years since I moved from the Bay area in 1981. I just happened to google his name today, Jan. 16, 2011, and his obituary popped up. It was quite a shock!
I remember him as a great conversationalist and his deep interest in classical music and animals. I know he will be missed by his family and friends and community. My deepist sympathyies are with his wife and family.

Jennifer...I've known Dan since I was about 10 years old. He was my neighbor and contributed poignant memories. (I believe I have photos if you would like). In my 20's we re-connected...I an adult who lived with him for about a year. Childhood, adulthood.... knowing him for both events. A significant person for me and I'm sad and feel a loss. I remember Bonong and Arjuna, his beloved cats at the time. Mine trying to fit in, his accomplished piano playing and passion for music, KUSP, his work in Indonesia and the relationships he created there, astrology, many things..his intelligence, his friends at SJSU, the students that would visit him years after taking a class of his. I called him after a serious earthquake in Indonesia occured, wanting to know he was safe. He told me of you...I think you were about to have a surgery. His voice carried love and concern in a way I had never heard. I'm very sorry for you..I know you must be special..

Jennifer and Vivian, I am very sorry to hear this news. I have known Dan since the accident and have gotten to know him over the years in our working relationship. He was a trusting man and cared about his friends. I will miss him.

I find this news of Dan with sadness. Jennifer... Vivian... I don't think we've ever met; but my heart and prayers go out to you both. Dan was one of the few who took a step forward to change Santa Cruz for the better. There are so many of us who are in his debt.
