Sue was raised by a gentleman farmer and wife on the vast homesteaded family land, Armstrong Station, near Bedford, Indiana. Her father exhibited organic philanthropy from an early age greatly impacting how Sue was to live her life.
Sue was a cheerleader, performer and the first of her Indiana University graduating class to walk in sweltering heat while 9 months pregnant with first born son Scott. Married to fellow student Ronald Brown, the couple welcomed younger brother Greg before moving from Indiana to Alaska, Oregon and California. Sue kept in touch with former neighbors and those she met through global travels. Portugal was a favorite. Mexico came in second.
Sue Armstrong Brown was literally a pioneer. Determined and rambunctious, she brought her life-long love of the ocean to the Bay Area, teaching elementary school before advocating for women in business. Sue became a real estate broker and with temerity and a savvy bent, Sue then created further opportunities for women by founding one of the first all-women real estate brokerages in California, becoming an integral part of the Silicon Valley Land Rush.
Aptos is where Sue found her dream house, spending forty-five years canoeing, protecting the coastline from development, educating as a docent and welcoming newcomers. Aptos is where she built a community of talented, curious, lifelong friends who fed her soul. In return, we were blessed with her charitable energy. Among her many passions were hospice, cancer research, protecting the ocean and extending her home to those who needed respite. Or simply a walk on the beach. Sue's philanthropic pioneering spirit never left her. It will never leave us, either.
Thank you for all you've done, Ma. Look for us in the sunlight and the heartbeat of the waves. We join you there.
