of Santa Cruz died Tuesday August 1, 2006 in Dominican Hospital. Victor "Vic" to everyone, was born February 8, 1915 in Sacramento, CA. He grew up in San Francisco and graduated from Polytechnic High in 1933. Vic met the love of his life, June Furtado, and they married March 25, 1939. Vic joined the Marines March 1944 and served with the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific on Midway, Saipan and Nagasaki. He returned home in 1946 and he and June raised their family in San Carlos where they lived for 35 years. Vic loved writing and won best short story in a contest in 1956.
Vic was a letter carrier in San Carlos for 30 years and retired in 1970. He worked for 3 different companies before retiring for good.
He is a member of Nat'l Association of Letter Carriers, Life Member of the VFW, Co-founding member of the Monterey Bay Detachment 711 Marine League, Member of the 2nd Marine Division Association, and member of Nat'l Association of Atomic Veterans where he served as Nat'l Coordinator for 2 years. While serving on the NAAV Board he spoke on Nat'l Televisions Nightline Show and went on a hunger strike in 1986 to support the repealing of the Warner Amendment.
He also served on the Golden State Mobile Home Owners Association.
Vic's recollections of his WWII experiences are featured in Studs Terkel's "The Good War".
He leaves his daughters Joanne Fleming of Santa Rosa, Lynda Moreno of Santa Clara, Patricia Trayler of Charlotte, NC., Mary Jane McNeese, of Salinas and Kim Newhouse of Aptos Sons-in-law Dan Trayler, Alan McNeese and Jeffrey Newhouse.
Vic was pre-deceased by his first wife June, and second wife Ann, his youngest daughter Vicki June Pate and a grandson Ron. He will be greatly missed by his nine grandchildren Denise Fall, Gina Brazda, Sheila McNeese, Daniel Trayler, Aaron McNeese, Jaime Moreno, Sarah Miller, Kevin Newhouse, Kristin Pate, and one great grandchild Jared Brazda. Vic will also be greatly missed by his cousin Donna Carlton of Soquel, sister-in-law Margaret Furtado and numerous nieces and nephews.
He will be much missed by the many friends he made during his full and active life. We will miss his wonderful "Story Telling", his beautiful smile and his sweet way of making everyone an important part of his life.
A memorial service and a celebration of his life will be held on September 9th at 10:00 AM at Congretional Church of Soquel.
