Dave was a wonderful man, class personified, as well as a preeminent journalist. He always had time to share a story or a laugh and made everyone around him feel like his best friend.

I had the pleasure of seeing Dave often when our paths crossed for a sporting event, usually football or golf. It was an honor to know him. He will be deeply missed.

My condolences to the Anderson family.

Our sincere condolences to the Anderson family for your great loss. May you find comfort in the memories of good times together, and hope in the words of the greatest man who ever lived to his friend that passed away:
"Lazarus, come out! 44The man who had been dead came out with his feet and hands bound with wrappings, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them: Free him and let him go.

To the Anderson Family:

I had the rare honor and privilege of meeting Dave at spring training '73, when he visited the World Champion Oakland A's camp. He just walked up to ME and introduced himself and couldn't have been nicer.. Sadly, it was the only time I ever met him but it is ingrained in my memory. While he was well known for his writing savvy, those like myself, who met him, knew he was so much more.

My condolences to you all.

Remember him in the Mount Carmel gym in Tenafly, watching Steve play, Peter Kahn, Mike Dugan. As a kid you didn't realize he was such an icon, as you would later learn. Just one of the nicest people in the world. Read all his golf stuff. Just a brilliant writer. RIP Mr. Anderson.

I was fortunate to have known Dave Anderson since he came to my journalism class at St. Peter's Prep to speak to us back in 1979. He was a personal inspiration to me back then, giving me the advice to start a clip file and make sure to judge my persona best work. He never forgot that day, much like I kept it near and dear. He never once ever thought of himself of being better than anyone else, even though he was one of only three sportswriter to ever earn the Pulitzer Prize. In fact, he downplayed that idea to the hilt, frowning upon the fact when I would introduce him to people and said, "This is Pulitzer Prize-winning sportswriter Dave Anderson," a statement that I beamed with pride.

Dave treated everyone the same, from the trash collectors at stadiums and arenas to the President of the United States. And he never once forgot me, always asking me about my health and well being, about where I was working and what I was doing. He was such a complete, kind, caring simple man and he treated everyone the same way, with the same dignity and respect.

I was so fortunate to have considered Dave Anderson as a friend. I know I'm not alone with that assessment. He was well loved by so many. He was a brilliant man and a brilliant writer, a gentle soul who cared about so many.

When my book about James J. Braddock came out in 2005, he was so proud of me and called to tell me. In fact, he wrote his column that Friday about how there were three books about Braddock being released the same week, capitalizing on the popularity of the Ron Howard-directed movie "Cinderella Man" that was coming out that next week. Dave wrote about how he personally knew two of the authors, namely myself and Jeremy Schaap, the son of his friend Dick Schaap. Anderson's seal of approval obviously helped the sale of both books.

But to have my book mentioned in Dave Anderson's column in the New York Times was the highlight of my career and I couldn't have thanked him more.

God bless Dave Anderson and all he did to enhance my career. I'm forever grateful and will cherish our relationship. May he rest in peace.
