As a member of the “Greatest Generation,” Denton Johnson will be remembered as one who always cared for others. Years ago as I began my journey concerning asbestos as the silent killer of many of those who served in World War II, in Denton, I found a great partner in this endeavor. I could not have been so successful with the Veteran’s Administration without the help of Denton. Denton knew all the medical in’s and out’s which helped cut through the red tape that so often discourages others.

Denton was instrumental in recognizing that asbestos had been largely ignored as a cause of illness and death for many of our servicemen. With Denton’s vast medical knowledge, his determination, his inquisitiveness, and his insurmountable desire to help others, he discovered ‘carrier dust.’ While this discovery may seem insignificant, it is just the opposite. With his discovery of the effects of carrier dust plus the acceptance of this diagnosis by the Veteran’s Administration, this information became the basis for many servicemen’s claims. By linking the carrier dust to lung disease, Denton was able to assist a vast number of service personnel with their VA claims.

I will miss Denton greatly as I look back upon our many years of friendship. From grade school at St. Elmo to just last week when I visited Columbus, Denton has always been a gentleman of great character. Honest, sincere, hardworking, and a true friend to all, he will be greatly missed.

I offer my condolences and heartfelt prayers to Denton’s family as they go through this period of sadness and adjustment. Knowing that Denton was such an instrumental person in so many lives is a wonderful and comforting way to remember such a remarkable man.

With much love and sympathy,

William and Dorothy Burton and Family

Dr. Johnson was my family doctor since I moved to Columbus in 1970. He saved my 38 year old husband from a heart attack, when for 10 days he was in critical condition. I will be eternally grateful for the wonderful care he provided for my family. My last visit to him was just before he retired for the second time in 2006. I have not found a doctor since then that even comes close to providing the care and concern that Dr. Johnson did. He is ireplaceable. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Ann Kearns

CD was my father's 1st cousin and when my father died in 1957, my mother moved us 4 kids back to Columbus. We were regular patients in CD's office, and he never, ever charged mother for his services. He was always kind and compassionate to us. He was truly one of a kind.

April 21, 2010

Jimmy and Charlie and all of the family,
We are so sorry to hear of Dr. Johnson's passing away. He delivered my children and was our family's doctor. When I was expecting my first child, Dr. Johnson told me a list of foods to avoid to keep from gaining too much weight. When I asked what food COULD I eat, he said "hay" (as in horse feed.) He had a great sense of humor and a common sense approach to treating me and my entire family that we will always appreciate. Judy and Benjamin Chastain

To All of the Johnson Family,

I was so sorry to read of Dr Johnson's passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to you during this very sad time.

My mother, Emma Watson, was a patient of Dr Johnson's for many, many years. In fact, he delivered my youngest sister. I can still remember my mother singing his praises. She thought he was the very best and she was right! Mama knows. Take comfort and pride in knowing that he truly cared about his patients. What a testimonial. We should all be so lucky.
