Edwin Hines Obituary

Edwin Yarbrough Hines - JACKSONVILLE, FL - After a courageous twelve year battle with cancer, Edwin Yarbrough Hines died on November 7, 2010. He had a will to live life to the fullest that was an inspiration to all who fought this, and other, battles with him; he touched many lives; his memory will live with all of us. Edwin was born in New York City on August 14, 1944 and attended the Buckley School. Moving to Lookout Mountain in 1951, he was graduated from the Bright School in 1956 and the Baylor School in 1962. As did three generations before him, Edwin graduated as a second lieutenant from the Virginia Military Institute in 1966 where, among other things, he was the founder and editor-in-chief of the school's literary magazine, The Sounding Brass, co-captain with his twin brother of the tennis team, and upon graduation was inducted into the Beta Commission of the Kappa Alpha Order. As an armor officer, he was first stationed in Ft. Bliss, Texas before serving with the 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam. He served with Division G-2 in Pleiku as an intelligence officer in 1968-69. While serving in the Central Highlands, he monitored the activity of the Viet Cong and the NVA and helped coordinate responsive troop action for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. Moving to Atlanta, he met his bride for life, Bette, to whom he was married for 40 years and with whom he had two daughters, Hilton and Anne. He had a long and distinguished career in the securities and investment business, first with White Weld, and then with Kidder Peabody, Salomon Brothers, Invesco, and in his later years with Cornerstone Investment Partners where he served as Director of Marketing and Client Service until his death. To say that Edwin lived a full life would be at best an understatement. Whether hitting tennis balls in Cashiers or golf balls in Scotland, climbing mountains around the world, shooting quail in South Georgia, taking photographs in the Galapagos, watching birds on his mountain house feeder, or simply sitting around a fire with family and friends, he did a lot in his 66 years. His mentoring skills positively impacted many lives. As a VMI graduate, he was honored recently to be selected to serve on the Board of Trustees of the VMI Foundation, and he was serving on its Investment Committee at the time of his death. He was an active communicant and former vestryman of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club, The Chattooga Club in Cashiers, North Carolina, and the Atlanta Viet Nam Business Association. In addition to his wife the former Elizabeth Mason Cay, he is survived by two daughters: Hilton Hines Ball (Butler) of Jacksonville, Fl.; and Anne Hines Wilson (Terrell) of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister Cornelia Hines Pelzer of Charleston, SC; a twin brother Richard Kennon Hines, V of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren: Mason Cooper Ball, Georgia Anne Ball, Elizabeth Chase Wilson, Christopher Maclean Ball, Mary Hannah Wilson and his loyal companions, Duke and Knight Hines. He was predeceased by his mother, Cornelia Yarbrough Hines and his father, Richard Kennon Hines, IV of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee H. Inman Allen, Neilson Brown, John E. Cay, III, Patrick M. Emmett, William B. Haile. Harrison Hubard, Joel Milne, Samuel H. Pettway, J. Erwin Prickett, Stephen B. Robison, W. Neil Thomas, III, John M. Turner, and Randolph W. Urmston will serve as honorary pallbearers. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree St., Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, November 9 at 2:00 PM. The service will be followed by a reception for friends and family in the church's parish hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the VMI Foundation, online at www.vmialumni.org or at P. O. Box 932, Lexington, Va 24450. Ed was my favorite business friend for more than 20 years when I worked in the Atlanta area. Always a gentleman and helping me with trading ideas, Ed was my "first call", which Salomon loved to know, whenever I had the next trade to propose. My relationship with Salomon grew stronger when Ed introduced me to his NY trading desk during trips to NY and especially at their famous Palm Beach fall Seminars. There I met Bette, the love of his life, and got to know them more personally with my wife. What fun we had at the "Crow's Nest".

Ed helped me succeed. I believe he helped many of us succeed, because he never had anything more than our interest at heart. I wasn't naive, dealing with many wall street firms trading bonds every day. Ed stood ahead of the rest.

I regret losing contact with Ed when my career took me to Kansas City and I lost his coverage. I didn't know of his fight with cancer or his unfortunate early death. My deepest condolences to Bette and his family. He will always remain an important part of my life. I'll remember him on his SC farm, 12-gauge shotgun on his arm, waiting for the next bird to be flushed by his dog, BAM!!!
Bette, dinner's on the way! God Bless!

Hello Sweet Bette,
I was out of town last Monday and Tuesday and did not even hear about Edwin's passing until today. I was stunned and saddened and have had you and Edwin on my mind since learning the news this morning. Mercy, you have been an inspiration to me over the years. Edwin's ready smile, deep grattitude for his blessings, and way of speaking his truth will stay with us all, no doubt. I am so sorry for your loss, and so glad Edwin kept healing despite his illness. I hope to see you soon. You are beloved, as was he, as are your children. God bless you all.

Bette, a few poor words with broken heart and tears. Years ago we spent just a few days together climbing the Kili but these days remain a privilege moment of our entire life. We shared pain and joy; rain, snow and sun; misery and beauty. Edwin was a perfect companion, it has been a privilege to know him and you Bette. It was a great chance to meet you again last year. Miles of ocean do not prevent me to be with you today.

One of the highest and most sincere complements E.Y. would bestow upon the character of another was to refer to them as “an erstwhile great American.” I cannot think of anyone more deserving or exemplary of this distinction than E.Y. himself, only I would suggest that without the designation of Father, Husband, Gentleman and Friend, it would be woefully incomplete. Edwin was truly one of the greats and our thoughts and prayers are with he and his family as we all mourn our loss in the passing of such a charismatic and engaging man. There will never be another like him!

November 9, 2010

Dear Mrs.Hines, Hilton and Anne-
I'm so sorry for your loss. Your husband and father was always so kind, gracious, thoughtful and intelligent. He was a great counterpart to my dad for many years in the Salomon years and that was a partnership AP will always treasure. He will be greatly missed by our whole family. My thoughts are with you.

How blessed we were to have shared the baptism of our grandson, Matthew, with you both, Bette! Betsy joins us in our thoughts and prayers for you all.
We wish we could be at the memorial today, just know we are there in our hearts.

On behalf of the VMI Class of 1966, please accept our condolences at your great loss. Ed was a loyal son of VMI, a great friend and classmate and we will miss him greatly. How tragic, but also how appropriate that he should pass away so near VMI Founder's Day and Veteran's Day, and in his 66th year. His full life, well-lived and his close ties to his room-mates and class will inspire many others to re-connect and live every precious day with his spirit. Your family will remain in our prayers; may our Heavenly Father lift you into His loving care and protection.

Dear Bette and family, Nancy and I were so saddened to hear of Edwin's passing. He will be sorely missed indeed. We have the fondest memories of our days in Atlanta with y'all as neighbors and friends and Edwin as business colleague. Ed, AP and I thought of ourselves as kind of like the 3 Musketeers, a closely-bound, successful team of Salomon swashbucklers..we worked hard and played hard but always had fun. Edwin was literally the Nicest Guy..and could make everyone around him feel better for his being there. We were lucky to have had him Best, Gary and Nancy
